Carole & Nadim Saad Authors of Kids Don’t Come with a Manual Interview, parenting, kids, book, tips, advice, Tell us about your own parenting experience.

As a couple with conflicting parenting styles, we were torn between the gentler ‘laissez-faire’ approach and the more disciplinarian ‘tiger parent’ philosophy. What we really wanted was a way of parenting that could fit with our two different personalities, and allow us to parent in harmony, and raise our children to become happy and fulfilled adults.

So casting the parenting fads to one side, we turned to the latest research in child psychology and neuroscience and devoured hundreds of the world’s leading parenting books to find practical, tried and tested evidence. And we were delighted to discover that there really are clear, straightforward methods for achieving what we call a ‘balanced’ approach to parenting.

How is your book different from other parenting books?

Our book is different in that it gives the perspective of two different parenting styles, which removes the guilt associated with having to fit into an ‘idealised parenting mould’. It also equips parents with specific step-by-step tools that are based on the latest scientific and psychological research in childhood development. These tools are designed to support you through the immediate challenges of everyday parenting, whilst also meeting your long-term goal to raise children to become happy, self-reliant and responsible adults.

What are the biggest parenting challenges?

It’s difficult to answer this as it largely depends on your child’s temperament/personality and our own personality, as well as our individual style of parenting. We all encounter challenges so the key thing is to learn how to prevent such issues from happening in the first place, which is one of the key objectives of our book. Learning how to anticipate challenges before they happen allows us time to think, so that we can respond rather than react to our children’s misbehaviour. So we’d say that one of the biggest challenges that parents face is learning to be more strategic in their approach to parenting.

Is there ever a right way to raise children?

We are under no illusions about the reality of family life and have no wish to make it ‘perfect’. The fact is that there is no magic wand to make a family life perfect! However, with a bit more awareness of our children’s needs, combined with some simple practical trouble-shooting tools, we can go a long way to making a real difference to our children’s, our family’s and our own lives.

What are the dangers of over-praising our children?

Research suggests that overpraising our children and particularly using evaluative praise with statements such as “You’re smart” or “You’re good” can create a fear of failure, because children become afraid to do anything that could expose their ‘flaws’ and call into question their ‘talent’. This type of praise results in children becoming less likely to try new things or taking risks for fear of not getting it ‘right’ and so they end up missing out on essential opportunities to develop their confidence and sense of self.

How do you stop other relatives becoming too involved?

We think that other relatives will always get involved and we need to accept this as they think that they are doing this to help us. However, if we are more confident in our parenting and we demonstrate that we can manage our kids without overreacting, etc. then other relatives tend to find it impressive, then start making compliments and ultimately become much less involved.

Top parenting tips.

1. Focus on planning and prevention – instead of always being reactive.
2. Give empathy as often as possible – and do not discount feelings.
3. Model any behaviour you want to instil in your children – starting with respect and joy.
4. Use encouragement and descriptive praise – instead of general or evaluative praise.
5. Focus on what you can control – and don’t undermine your authority with empty threats.
6. Allow your children to have some control over their lives – offer them limited choices and ask them questions.
7. Allow mistakes to happen – they are opportunities for learning.
8. Coach your children to own and solve their problems – and they will become self-responsible.
9. If you have to deliver consequences, do it with respect and empathy – and delay them when needed.
10. When you say or do something you regret, ‘Rewind and Replay’ and ‘Repair’ – to keep a strong connection with you children.

What is the biggest mistake people make when raising children?

This is another challenging question as it’s difficult to identify one key mistake! However, one that is really common and can really affect children as they grow up is for their parents to frequently discount their feelings. This is something that parents do, often without even realising it. We tend to either reassure our children or try to ‘toughen them up’ – whichever approach we use, the message they hear is that they’re not supposed to feel the way they are feeling.

They grow unable to trust their feelings and cannot manage their emotions well, and this is an essential life skill. It’s far better to use empathy as a way of establishing and nurturing a bond with your child than try to ‘make light’ of their feelings, as this simply undermines their innate need to be listened to and have their feelings acknowledged.

Can parenting be made easier?

Our book ‘Kids don’t Come With a Manual – The Essential Guide to a Happy Family Life’ is designed to help empower parents to deal with most situations effectively. So that misbehaviour and the challenges that your children throw your way become opportunities for learning and growing rather than being stressors or negative experiences. Our main goal is to empower parents to deal with everyday parenting challenges without confrontation or anger, and raise their children to become the happy and confident individuals that they deserve to be.

An Evening For Fashion & Lifestyle Influencers

On Thursday I headed to Amazon HQ along with other fashion and lifestyle writers and bloggers for an Evening for Fashion & Lifestyle Influencers hosted by Amazon.co.uk. It was an entertaining evening, full of information and amazing, inspirational people. There was informative talks by fashion and blogging industry professionals, and the Amazon Fashion team also gave a great talk.

An Evening for Fashion & Lifestyle Influencers An Evening for Fashion & Lifestyle Influencers coco's tea party

I checked out the fashionable people and eat far too many biscuits and canapés. Professional Blogger, Ella Gregory (CocosTeaParty.com) was brilliant, giving amazing tips and talking endearingly about how she got started. Cosmopolitan journalist Gemma Royston-Claire was up next. Gemma gave great advice on writing engaging content and giving readers what they want. “People click for inspiration, education or entertainment.” Gemma said. Good advice indeed, and she should know as she started off with her own blog and now writes for Cosmopolitan Magazine. After food and drink we learned about Amazon Fashion. I was left very impressed with what Amazon had to offer and Frost will hopefully be doing a collaboration with them soon. I wanted to start shopping right there and then.

Freelance Fashion Stylist Rachel Story was next. She styles for HELLO! Magazine amongst others. Rachel gave some really great tips on styling. She is obviously at the top of her game and I learned a lot from her.

Lastly, Reena Rai from Fashiondaydreams.com talked about How to use Affiliate Marketing. Reena was definitely the most stylish of the evening. Head to toe in black and lace accessorised with killer shoes. She gave great tips on how to monetise with affiliate marketing.

The evening finished off with a Q&A with the Amazon team. The Q&A was great as I learned a lot of little tips to improve the SEO of Frost. Thank you to Amazon and all of the speakers for an amazing evening.

Understanding The Mortgage Minefield

Social Media Mistake

A mortgage is a loan that is taken out to buy a property or piece of land. The loan is then paid back to the lender in monthly instalments over a set term. If the borrower defaults on payments, the lender can ultimately repossess the property and resell it to recover the money.

Borrowing a large amount of money to buy a property is a big commitment, and a mortgage can last for as long as 30 years. This means it can a huge impact on your daily life, as it will form a large part of the household’s monthly outgoings. If taking on a mortgage is in your mind here are some important steps you can take to get off to a good start.

Save for a deposit

The larger the down payment you make toward purchasing a property, the lower your monthly repayment rate will be. In addition, putting down a larger deposit gives you more mortgage types to choose from, allowing you the possibility of finding a lower interest rate.

Improve your credit history

Lenders will look at your credit report before they agree to lend you money, so a good credit score is essential. You can check a credit record online free of charge through various companies. The report shows any bankruptcies, other applications that have been made for credit, and missed payments on other loans. Before applying for a mortgage, be sure to correct any errors in your report. To improve your score, register to vote at your current address (lenders use the electoral roll to protect themselves against fraud).

Understand your options

The two most common types of mortgage loans are interest-only and repayment mortgages. With an interest-only mortgage the capital debt is not repaid and at the end of the term the full amount will still be outstanding. These used to run alongside endowment insurance policies where the sum assured was set to accrue enough funds to pay off the capital sum when the mortgage term ended. With reducing income on investments and low interest rates endowment mortgages have fallen out of favour.

With a repayment mortgage, payments are made to pay off the capital and the interest so that at the end of the term, the borrower owns the property outright. Interest charges take precedence in the early years so it is some time before inroads are made into the sum owed. Mortgage life insurance is essential with such a big financial commitment. If the borrower dies during the mortgage term the sum assured will pay off the outstanding debt. Some borrowers also take out insurance to cover mortgage repayments in the event of redundancy or an inability to work due to long-term illness.

Research different mortgage packages

Mortgage packages have either a fixed rate (for a set term) or a variable rate. With a variable rate, the rate can increase or decrease with the Bank of England’s base rate. Make sure to perform adequate research to find the best deal.

Start by using comparison websites to determine the different mortgage packages available for first-time buyers. You can also use an online affordability calculator to determine how much you can afford to borrow. Finally, talk to a specialist mortgage broker and consult at least one financial adviser for advice before taking out a mortgage.

Taking out a mortgage can be a daunting task; it can also be very exciting. As long as you carefully consider your options and seek sound professional advice, you can finally own your own home and have a good investment for your future.

Naomi Watts: I Was Ready To Quit Acting

acting, acting advice, quit acting, Naomi WattsSome actors find success easy and others struggle for years. Naomi Watts definitely falls into the latter category. The Oscar nominated actress used to drive for hours to pick up bad scripts people refused to send her. She regularly doubted that she would ever have a career after moving to Los Angeles as things were so tough.

“[I went from playing leads] to being someone who had to drive for two hours to get two pages of really bad dialogue in some TV movie, just because they couldn’t be bothered faxing me the pages. And I did that for pretty much ten years. When it was like, you know what, I can’t handle it, I’m giving up. But every time my bags were packed, I’d get a call saying, ‘You’ve got this part.'” she told InStyle magazine.

The 46-year-old actress took anything she was offered when she moved to LA.

“Oh, listen, I did not have any snobbery about anything. I just wanted to work. I always had the attitude that work begets work and one thing would roll to the next, I think I knew I had something. But I certainly had plenty of doubt.”

The star did not get her big break until David Lynch cast her in Mulholland Drive solely from her photograph.

New Social Shopping Site Launched For New And Expecting Parents

parents, parenting, kids, berry clever, Parents need all the help they can get. Which is why we think BerryClever, a brand new social shopping site for new and expecting parents is great. It aims to make online shopping more fun and interactive by giving parents the power to discover and choose the perfect parenting products by reading and sharing honest advice from the people they can trust the most, their friends. BerryClever has had over 7,000 members joins since it launched 3 months ago.

Online shopping has revolutionised our lives and the range of product choices available to parents for their little ones has never been greater. But with this overwhelming range of choice often comes more questions than answers, especially for first time parents who are under pressure to buy all sorts of baby essentials that they often know nothing about. BerryClever’s research found that an incredible 91% of people surveyed admitted that they had wasted money buying the wrong products for their babies. What’s more 86% of people surveyed wanted their friend’s recommendations when making purchasing decisions. So where do you start when it comes to choosing the right products for your baby? That’s where BerryClever comes in.

BerryClever has created a unique online environment, which allows you to connect with existing friends and new like-minded ones to discover the products they love, regret or simply can’t live without. Kristi Flax and Emma Kafton, who are both mums themselves, recognise that parents in particular prefer recommendations from people they know and trust when it comes to buying products for their babies. Because the reviews on BerryClever are written by friends in your network, you know they have no vested interest in promoting certain products and that they are just sharing their own honest and experienced views. Emma explains that “the idea is to make online shopping for your baby feel intuitive rather than the transactional and anonymous experience you get on many other ecommerce websites. With so much online content being disingenuous, the ability to read information from people you trust is ever more valuable”.

BerryClever’s reviews, known as ‘tips’, are no longer than 150 characters making them quick to write and read on mobile devices and ideal for busy mums on the go. As parents overwhelmingly prefer reviews from people they know, BerryClever’s unique algorithm ranks reviews based on their social profile so they will always be shown the most relevant products reviewed by their friends and the people they are most similar to first.

Users can also upload Pictips – a product photo review, watch recommended videos from the web and create lists of favourite or most wanted products for themselves or to share with others. The ability to explore friends’ lists provides a simple way for experienced parents to help their newly pregnant friends find everything they need for every stage of their birth and child’s development, from weaning and feeding to potty training, playing and learning.

Not only does BerryClever help parents make the important decisions on what to buy, it also quickly and easily links directly through to their Amazon account or the retailer’s website to allow them to make the purchase. There is even a ‘demand a lower price’ feature to help parents, who on average spend £5,000 in the first year of their child’s life alone, save money on expensive items like buggies and car seats. If a lower price can be found, the user will be sent an email within 48 hours confirming an offer which they can choose to either accept or decline, with no hidden small print.

Every feature is intended to make BerryClever a place where shopping can become a fun, social and resourceful experience.

Sign up now and invite your friends to see what they really think of those ‘must-have’ products www.berryclever.com

Don’t Let Renting Hold Back Your Interior Design Ambitions

The Big Ben Wall ClockinteriorsIf you are living in rented accommodation, it’s often tempting to put your interior design ambitions on hold. You may think, for example, that as it’s not your property then any efforts you make will be wasted. However, with a little bit of creativity and ingenuity you can still create a beautiful interior design scheme, one that you’re happy to live with, even if you are staying in a rented house or flat.

Refresh the décor

One option that is quick, cheap and simple is to refresh the paint in the various rooms. Using white or magnolia paint throughout is unlikely to upset the letting agent or landlord, though it always makes sense to check beforehand, especially if you find that the landlord or a previous tenant has made a bold statement by using striking colours or patterns. Generally, property owners will be more than happy to benefit from a refreshed interior that’s free of charge. They will also know that their tenant respects and wants to look after the property.

Personalise the space

Pale, neutral shades will provide a good backdrop for your possessions as these are what will make your rented accommodation feel like it is your own space. This doesn’t necessarily result in a cold or sparse atmosphere as once you add your own personal accessories you can make the space your home. To warm up the rooms add your chosen decorations, such as colourful artwork and family portraits, which will help make any house or flat feel like home.

Make good use of all the storage available, including any shelves. Fill these with your favourite books, games and DVDs as well as other personal artefacts. Even if you are living in a furnished or partially furnished property, you can still cover floors with your own rugs and sofas with your preferred cushions, blankets and throws. By making the most of personal touches, there is no need to consider that rented property necessarily presents a design limitation.

Buy flexible furniture

Remember that every item of furniture you buy for the property (unless you are replacing something that you have broken) is your personal possession and can be taken with you when you go. This means that additional pieces that you like represent an investment. Be sure to exercise caution in this respect, though, as things that might look fine if you are in a spacious property, such as a king size bed, very large wardrobe or enormous sofa, may not fit so easily into a smaller one; as far as seating is concerned, modular sofas or individual statement pieces are much more versatile.

Make it your own

With a splash of paint and a little imagination, you can really make any place into a home. If you love colour, then white or magnolia surfaces provide you with the ideal palette to be dressed by curtains, rugs, cushions and throws. Add to this your favourite artworks and artefacts and you’ll finally feel like you’re really home.

Tips To Get a Hotel Business Off The Ground

Tips to get a hotel business off the groundChoose your location wisely

To have a successful hotel business, you need clientele. Tourist hot spots are, of course, a prime location. However, if you are just starting a hotel, many prime locations can be too costly. Although it can be hard to predict some things, if you can buy property in an up-and-coming area, it is possible to start a hotel business with less capital investment. You also stand to gain a lot of equity. There are plenty of examples of entrepreneurs seeing their real estate investment gain considerable value over the years. Stephen Wynn is famous for setting the standard for luxury hotels in Las Vegas. He started investing and developing real estate before Vegas became the world-renowned city it is today. His first Vegas enterprise was renovating the dilapidated Golden Nugget; however, it was the opening of his Mirage hotel in 1989 that set the standard for luxury Vegas accommodations. Now Stephen has the world famous Bellagio. A good real estate agent can help you with delray beach housing as well.

Know your budget

It is easy to go over budget when starting a hotel business. For example, you will need more money if you plan on offering a food service or other amenities. Even lower-priced hotels usually at least offer a continental-style breakfast, but a kitchen is not necessarily needed for that. If you buy a building, make sure that you are prepared for the costs of renovations and upgrades. Sometimes you can get a real bargain by getting a property that needs some work. The downside is that it can be hard or impossible to know what issues a building might have. A building inspector can help you make sure that you are not biting off more than you can chew. You don’t want to find the perfect property and then discover when the walls are being redone that you have asbestos that needs to be removed.

Get ready for some hard but rewarding work

The hotel business is not easy. You have many people to keep happy. Stamina, and a good attitude are all necessary to succeed in the hotel industry.
