Entertainment on the Move: The Best Movie and TV Streaming Apps

If you’re slightly lazy like us, the chances are that you consider the biggest benefit of smartphones to be not the Sat-Nav, the e-books and the ability to work from home but simply the fact that it’s now possible to stream South Park whilst sat in the bath.  In a tribute to that level of sloth, we’re going to take a look at what we think are the very best TV and Movie streaming apps currently available on the Android market. These should work on everything from a Windows-based system to a tablet PC by Lenovo.

Netflix

tv and moviesOh, god bless it.  At less than a tenner a month, Netflix offers the ability to stream an unholy (and unlimited) amount of different content right to your phone or tablet (as well as to your Xbox or Laptop).  There are literally hundreds of shows and movies available to watch immediately.  What is available will depend on whereabouts you are – Netflix is region specific, so the UK area has access to a number of classic British comedies, with the US having exclusive rights to some of their own standout shows.  The only thing worth noting is that Netflix doesn’t always update straight away – other streaming devices might get the latest shows more quickly.

Flixter

Originally, Flixter wasn’t actually a streaming app – it was purely based around information, operating in much the same way as IMDB does.  However, it now also streams movies purchased through Ultraviolet.  Ultraviolet itself is actually a bit fiddly to sign up for (it’s certainly more time-consuming than singing up for Netflix, say), but once that’s sorted it’s a very enjoyable app.  It’s worth observing here, though, that there are some devices that it won’t work on – it’s a good idea to double check before handing over any cash, possibly using the free movie that they give you when you sign up.

HBO GO

This app’s popularity will be primarily based around two things.  First, whether or not you’re in the good ol’ US of A.  Secondly, whether you actually like HBO!  This app – as you might have guessed – is based solely around the US channel and can only be used by those that have a cable service that already has HBO included.  Those complexities aside, for those that do like HBO (and given that the channel has produced Game of Thrones, the Wire, Boardwalk Empire and the Sopranos amongst others, everyone really should like it) the app is a must-have.

Sky GO

Just as HBO is for the Americans out there, so Sky Go is for the British.  Unlike HBO Go, though, Sky’s app can actually be paid for with a separate subscription, meaning that you can sign up for it on a per month basis and end the contract whenever you like.  As well as showing a large amount of comedies and dramas (not to mention the standard channels) Sky Go offers two main things: sport and movies.  Both genres have four different channels each, all of them filled to the brim with everything from cricket to baseball and from everything from Harry Potter to the Human Centipede (not that anyone would want to watch that). For sports and movie fans, the Brits need look no further.

True Blood Will Finish Stronger Than Ever: Rob Kazinsky

Persistently renowned for pushing the boundaries with themes of death and rebirth, this spooky, vampire drama with half human fairies thrown in for good measure, has been taken to the hearts of the public and inspired many copycat style dramas. None though will equal series 6, which promises to be not just memorable but thoroughly dramatic and emotional. With Series 6, producer Brian Buckner has set himself the onerous task of proving to loyal fans that True Blood didn’t outstay its welcome, by ensuring he leaves fans begging for more with Robert Kazinksy’s short but sweet dalliance with vampires.

New Cast Member
Robert Kazinsky, the 30 year old British actor of EastEnders and Pacific Rim fame, joins True Blood in its sixth and final season. This is a brave move for Kazinsky, entering a show which has such an established and cult following in its closing act. Making one’s mark on an established partnership is no mean feat, particularly with a cast and crew who have worked on the previous five seasons. However, it seems that injecting new blood into True Blood’s final series has injected new life into the well-worn formula of this sexy horror drama about real life southern vampires.
Kazinky’s emergence onto the scene provided a new frisson between his character Macklyn Warlow and Sookie Stackhouse. Kazinzky’s character evolves over the course of the season like a good wine ages over a season, no doubt to the anticipated delight of True Blood’s loyal fans.

What to expect in series 7
A real sense of fresh energy has been poured into this series of True Blood which has given the show a major boost and helped ensure that it carries its strengths from previous seasons, and also injects a new impetus to this, its swan song.
Given that half the cast are now no more, there has been a welcome return to a more parochial and homely family unit. A feel which Kazinsky thinks strikes the right note for the final season: “That’s absolutely the right way to go, so this entire [sixth] season was about getting there. That’s Brian’s dream and what he’s doing is brilliant for the show.”
No shrinking violet, and just as well given the abundant nude scenes the character plays as a love interest of lead character Sookie Stackhouse, played by Anna Paquin, Kazinksy tackles some interesting plotlines in the show including a scene with Jason Stackhouse, Sookie’s brother.
Determined to end the show on a high note, producer Brian Buckner has bravely cast Kazinsky in several passionate scenes, none more risk taking than that with fellow co-star Ryan Kwanten who plays Jason, Sookie’s womanising brother. This interseting twist tests and examines the boundaries and relationships between Sookie, Jason and Macklyn. Series 6 is guaranteed to be a show stopper of vampire proportions.
Just as it sparked a revival of vampirology when it premièred in 2008, so it has left the stage with its fans wanting more, surely the sign of a meaty drama, talented cast and great writers which will prove hard, if not impossible, to emulate.

House-of-Cards-Season-2-Trailer-Premiere-Date

Right after House of Cards was nominated for four Golden Globes, Netflix released the first trailer for Season 2; Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright and Carey Stoll were nominated for their roles, while the show was nominated for Best Drama Series.

“The road to power is paved with hypocrisy … and casualties,” Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey), says. Expect this season to be darker, more brutal. We can’t wait for the February 14th 2014 release date. Let the butchery begin.

From Homeless To Success: East Coast Rail Man’s Journey

fromhomelesstosuccessNew TV Show Reveals East Coast Rail Man’s Journey To A Brighter Future

Against all odds – the fascinating story of how guard Dan Webster rose through the ranks to become a star of the small screen

When Dan Webster thinks about homeless people, he knows what they’re going through – he has walked in their shoes. He knows what it’s like just trying to survive on the margins of life.

In his very short lifetime, this likeable young man has accomplished many things against all odds — overcoming a travelling childhood, and rising out of homelessness and verbal abuse to become a train guard on one of Britain’s flagship rail routes, the East Coast line between London, Yorkshire and Scotland.

Yet his story is much more than one of accumulating stature and overcoming adversity, and he never forgets his past.

Now a qualified Train Guard, Dan (25) was born in Aberdeen and grew up in Sheffield, where he attended the city’s Dinnington Comprehensive School. Dan  now lives in Leeds, and has become a star of the small screen after featuring in the new Sky 1 HD 10 part TV documentary series All Aboard: East Coast Trains.

Dan arrived in York several years ago with no job and nowhere to live, and although he lacked a degree, the pedigree and social connections to land a white-collar job, he continued to apply for multiple roles across several months – and finally landed a job as a cleaner on East Coast trains.

Dan’s meteoric rise from couch surfer to Train Guard was a long time coming but no less deserved.

Wanting to make something of himself, Dan decided to try his luck in York and borrowed £70 from his mum – half of which went on a £35 open return train ticket from Mansfield to York.

Arriving in York with only the remaining £35 in his pocket, Dan, otherwise had just the clothes on his back and an invitation to sleep on a friend’s floor while he searched for that elusive prize – a job.

The following weeks and months saw Dan going from place to place in search of a good night’s sleep, but with it came with a price, as those who at first kindly put him up for the night often verbally abused him over his predicament.

Alone and with nowhere to go, Dan had to accept the put-downs – but it wasn’t until a colleague gave him a telephone number for a landlord that Dan’s luck began to change for the better.

Within minutes of that ‘phone call, Dan was on the move once again thanks to the landlord’s kindness. He was picked up and moved into small but safe surroundings in York.

That change in fortune was only the beginning, as Dan secured temporary employment at York station with contractor Initial as a Station Cleaner. After several short stints across a variety of roles, Dan applied for a position with East Coast that saw him undertake duties as an On-Board Customer Service Assistant, a Station Customer Service Assistant in York and ultimately, to begin training as a Train Guard based in Leeds.

Overcoming multiple obstacles placed in front of him, Dan’s story is one of true grit and determination.

Dan clung to his goal of independence through sheer hard work, and at the end of his training programme, Sky 1 HD viewers saw the happy ending as Dan was selected for a permanent job as an East Coast Train Guard.

“Staying motivated isn’t a challenge for me,” he says today. “When I think about all I want to accomplish, despite all my successes, I haven’t even made a dent in what’s possible.”

“East Coast has always looked after me and because of that it’s been the longest I’ve ever been in a job and one that I’ve progressed in too.

“I’m really grateful for the opportunities East Coast have given me. I eventually want to become a train driver, but I understand you need to walk before you can run.

“For me, it’s a great feeling and sense of achievement to get to where I have done today, but there is a lot more for me to achieve and I won’t get there without hard work and determination.

“I’m pleased East Coast have looked at the bigger picture and seen the potential in me and not labelled me due to my circumstances. I’ve had to work hard to get here but I also appreciate the opportunity and responsibility East Coast has given me. This job has given me a purpose in life and the opportunity to prove myself which is a great feeling.

“I’ve grown up a lot since I was homeless, through the experience of different roles and responsibilities including life experience which has provided me with the building blocks to climb a career ladder. The main thing is that I’ve been given the responsibility to do a job, and to prove to those people who gave me the chance that they were right.

“The Sky 1 HD documentary is a once in a lifetime opportunity to showcase to viewers what it takes to not only be part of a successful company, but also to succeed in the rail industry. Some people don’t always see the bigger picture, and this show gives an insight in to what goes on behind the scenes.

“If you had asked me what I wanted to do when I was younger I wouldn’t have wanted to work on the railway, I wanted to be a fire fighter. These days I think of driving trains as cool because like fire-fighting, both require a high level of concentration and taking approximately 500 people safely to their destination also requires a high level of responsibility.

“My family are incredibly proud of me. They have seen how far I have come and what I’ve achieved in such a short space of time. Knowing how proud they are means so much: there’s no better feeling than knowing that the ones who mean the most to you are proud of you, and it justifies some of the hard decisions I’ve had to make in life.

“I’ve been very focused and determined to work for a company like East Coast, and what makes East Coast such a great place to work is the people you work with – it’s these people you see day in day out that are part of such a close-knit community that make such a difference.  I know it sounds like a cliché, but it’s like having an extended family.

“East Coast have always been good to me; I feel wanted. If you look after people then you get the best out of them and East Coast is a great company to work for.

“If I had any advice for anyone wanting to get ahead in life then it would be if you at first don’t succeed, try and try again, never give up. No matter how low you find yourself in life, you reap what you sow, you only ever get out of life what you put in.

“I have known so many people who have said they can’t find employment, but often they have never done anything about it. I’ve always put myself in a scenario to get what I want in life. I’ve had to remain positive to succeed otherwise I wouldn’t be where I am today.

“Life doesn’t have to be about been rich and famous, for me it’s about being happy and achieving my life aspirations. Thanks to East Coast, I can safely say I’m achieving both.”

Now, Dan is more acutely aware that time is “the ultimate luxury.” He says. “At a certain point there are more yesterdays than tomorrows. So, I plan on spending all my tomorrows very carefully, and appreciating every one of them.”

“I owe so much to my parents, Mark and Diane, including the moment that got me pointed in the right direction,” he says: “I was a kid, watching Skateboarding on the TV, and one of the commentators said that some of the best skaters in the world earn a good living. I whistled and said, under my breath, ‘Man, earning a good living doing something you love!’ And my mother, who was in the next room, said, ‘Son, if you want to, one day you could do something similar.’ With that one sentence, she convinced me that in spite of where I came from, I could attain whatever goals I set for myself. That one day I, too, could be great at something if I put my mind to it.”

About the future, Dan believes the best is yet to come. “Hopefully, my legacy and what I’ll be remembered for has not happened yet,” he says. “I don’t want to sit on my laurels. There’s still too much to achieve.”

All Aboard: East Coast Trains is an access-all-areas, fly-on-the-wall documentary series that looks at some of the people behind the scenes at the publicly-owned train operator.

Dan starred in the second episode, entitled We are Family, which broadcast on Sky 1 HD at 20.00 on Tuesday 19 November.

In the episode, viewers saw Daniel undertake his final test on the job assessment to become a qualified train guard. The delighted Daniel passed with flying colours, so took on a train of his own from Leeds to London.

Entertainment for Lazy Weekends

It’s a cold, wet Friday night in winter. You’ve been fending off anxious clients and reassuring harassed colleagues all week. Like everyone else in the city, you’ve been getting up, and going home, in the dark.

ricksterbot-winter-photo-751x500

You listen to the beautiful “clunk” of the front door closing as you step inside the house. You decide that, if possible, it’ll be the last time you hear that sound this weekend.

Home alone. Fantastic! It’s going to be a properly lazy weekend – but how are you going to keep yourself entertained?

What’s On Telly?

Fifteen years ago you’d have been circling things you wanted to watch in the Radio Times with a red biro. With broadband and Freeview, your options are almost limitless. You won’t get through every episode of Breaking Bad this weekend, but you could make a start. If it gets a bit grim (which – spoiler alert – it does) try interspersing it with episodes of Modern Family. Or Bagpuss.

bagpuss-1024_195496k

No need to traipse down to the video store anymore either. How about a World War Z / This Is The End / Frances Ha marathon? World War Z was supposed to be terrible – it isn’t.

Games

When all that drama gets too much for you (Bagpuss can be quite draining), there’s a huge number of online games to consider. They’re not going to play themselves, you know! Everything’s available, from MMORPG’s like the free-to-play Pandora Saga to online versions of the nations favourite game, Bingo. The hardest part will be deciding what to play.

Read

At some point you may feel the need to step away from the screen. Maybe just swapping to a smaller one – like a Kindle – would do the trick? That Morrissey out of The Smiths has a book out, you know. We’ve also heard rumours of some kind of Bridget Jones follow-up. There may even be an actual book on the shelves to read!

Listen

Now we’re going retro. Is there a forlorn-looking pile of vinyl LP’s in the cupboard? A decent record player in the attic? If you’ve spent the last decade listening to MP3’s, and you have a reasonably good system, you might just amaze yourself with the upgrade in quality. There’s a reason people are still releasing vinyl records!

Eat, Play, Sleep

Once you’ve located the Billie Holiday LP, why not try cooking something you’ve never tried before out of that Rick Stein book that Auntie Beryl got you for Christmas? And when you’re done, you could hoist the dusty old guitar out of the basement and take a lesson on YouTube!

Or maybe it’s time for a nap. Whatever you decide to do on your Lazy Weekend, remember that catching up on sleep is never something to feel guilty about!
