Fashion Classics: Converse

There are some things in life that are so classic, so iconic, that no matter how many people wear them, and no matter how much time passes, they will always remain a classic. Converse is one such thing. In fact Converse recently launched a new video with the tagline “Shoes are boring. Wear sneakers”. How right they are. Trainers with a suit looks awful but you can wear Converse with anything and still look smart. Think Lily Allen in her prom dresses and The Strokes in their suits.

I bought my first pair of Converse when I was a teenager and I am still wearing them years later.
classicconverse

Converse started in 1908, Marquis Mills Converse decided to start a rubber sneaker company. In 1913 Converse said, “Our company was organized in 1908 fully believing that there was an earnest demand from the retail sneaker dealer for a rubber sneaker company that would be independent enough not to follow every other company in every thing they do.”

That is the thing about Converse. They have stood the test of time. With great design and good quality they have entered the popular conscious. Even though they are popular they are still a great fashion buy. They bridge the gap between cool and popular. Frost loves.

Do you own a pair of Converse?

How To Build A Website

buildawebsiteBuilding a website can seem like a daunting experience. Especially to the technologically challenged. But like most things, when you get the hang of it, it becomes a lot easier.

To get you on your way Frost has put together a handy guide. Good luck!

Get Some Hosting

If you are going to build a website you need to have it hosted on a server. When deciding what hosting site to go with ask around. Word of mouth is important. 1&1 My Website have a good reputation. They also have good customer service. My first ever website was hosted by them. Aw, memories.

Get a Domain

Different from hosting. The domain is the name of the site. So Frostmagazine.com is our domain. A good domain name enhances your brand and makes your URL (uniform resource locator) easier to find. These can be inexpensive. Although it you want katemiddleton.com not only would that probably be taken, but it would also be very expensive.

Think About The Design

You want a design that is pleasing to the eye and easy to read. Also think carefully about installing flash or lots of plugins. This will slow the site down and some people might not even be able to view it.

Content is King

This is the most important thing on your site. Nothing is more important than content. It will get people coming back to your site. You need to update your content regularly. Not only for your readers (if an online magazine) or customers (if for your business) but also for the search engines. If you constantly update your site then search engines like google love it as it shows growth.

Think About Getting a Template

You don’t need to learn how to code. You can use a wordpress template. We use one on Frost Magazine and so do a lot of other sites.

Ask For Help

Never be scared to ask for help. If you are stuck you can ask your hosting site’s customer service, search on the internet or ask the question on Twitter and Facebook. People love to help.

Back Up!

This is so important: Back up your site! If you don’t back up then you can lose all of your hard work in an instant. So many things can go wrong so back up at least once a week.

Designing the Middle East: Part 1 at 19 Greek Street | Art

Designing the Middle East Part 1:2‘Designing the Middle East: Part 1’ (28 March – 17 May 2013) is the first in a two-part exhibition series presented by Soho design gallery, 19 Greek Street. It will showcase, for the first time in the UK, the work of Tel Aviv designers Noam Dover and Michal Cederbaum, alongside their longterm collaborator, the London based Israeli designer Yoav Reches. The exhibition will also include several works by senior Israeli designers, invited by the exhibitors in order to foster an additional dialogue between the displayed works.
Curated by 19 Greek Street owner and creative director Marc Péridis, ‘Designing the Middle
East: Part 1’ acts as a tribute to the passion, courage and love that exist alongside the terrible
conflict that divides this area of the world.
The exhibition will explore how contemporary design can respond to a reality marked by
conflict and division. It will present an exploration of creative processes within a local context:
how do the characteristics of a place influence our use of tools and materials, and what visual
forms come out of these choices? This perspective demonstrates a unique link between design,
craft and production, formulating a distinctive nature of design and fabrication.
Works such as ‘Saj Tables,’ constructed from the spun steel domes used for making pita bread,
and ‘Concrete,’ vases that explore the relationship between fragility and mass fabricated from a
material not normally associated with craft, highlight this continued questioning of the creative
process and the materials used.
The work by Noam Dover and Michal Cederbaum can be seen to merge the traditions of
craftsmanship with technology, while frequently confusing this relationship. ‘Scan & Scale’
perfectly illustrates this by taking nature, in this case a pebble, as a starting point and recreating
it through computer-aided design via CNC technology. In doing so they seek to stretch the
boundaries of various technologies.
Yoav Reches’ ‘Composition of Air’ celebrates the diversity of and delicate composition of that
most everyday and omnipresent item that surrounds us, namely the air that we breathe. A
collection of ten glass vessels represent the ten most common gases found in the composition of
air and are colour coded according to their industrial charts.

the essence of our magnificent British heritage”

The Palaces

The gardens of Historic Royal Palaces were for hundreds of years the playgrounds of kings and queens. At Hampton Court Palace the 60 acres of formal gardens and 750 acres of royal parkland, represent four centuries of the finest landscape design. Opened to the public by Queen Victoria in 1838, the gardens are famous throughout the world and have been the inspiration of expert perfumers in developing this unique home fragrance range.

The Range

Diligently crafted perfumes remain true to the horticultural heritage of the royal palaces and their gardens, in creating a range of authentic traditional fragrances. These are complemented perfectly by the intricate graphical depictions featured on the product packaging, which have been inspired by architectural elements of the palaces.

Ashleigh & Burwood’s range is available from Amazon UK.

Artist Stirrups Horsemeat Controversy.

A piece of art shocked commuters in the capital yesterday as graphic artist, Patrick Thomas, debuted his latest provocative piece, ‘Moo’, to the public, making more than a subtle nod to the current horse-meat scandal.

Ahead of the Affordable Art Fair which takes place early next month, the Berlin-based artist, known for creating powerful messages through the use of iconic images, previewed ‘Moo’ at Leicester Square where the artwork was aired across the tube station throughout the day.

The piece attracted plenty of attention with many commuters posing next to the displays and tweeting their amusement. However, some remained oblivious as they tucked into their burgers and strolled past the art with their weekly shopping.

Artist, Patrick Thomas, who created the piece said “It is the job of an artist to be witness to his time in history and art should have a social function and be an intrinsic part of everyday life. Art can be a powerful weapon and although this print is intentionally humorous; in the context of the horsemeat scandal currently dominating the UK press – it conceals a darker message.”

Patrick Thomas is one of thousands of contemporary artists showing at the Affordable Art Fair this March and can be found at Outline Editions’ gallery stand. The ‘Moo’ silkscreen print is an edition of 100, priced at £145 each.

The Affordable Art Fair is London’s friendliest and most welcoming art fair, with all art priced from £40 – £4,000, the fair runs at the Battersea Evolution building in Battersea Park from 7 – 10 March.
