One-Armed Man Builds Prosthetic Arm so He Can Pilot a Plane | Inspirational Stories

A one-armed man whose missing limb was severed from the shoulder in a freak biking accident has invented a prosthetic replacement which will allow him to fly a plane.

Steven Robinson’s right arm was torn off by another rider’s footpeg during a collision over 30 years ago, and attempts to rebuild his limb proved unsuccessful.

Since his crash, Steven, 51, has never worn a prosthetic arm but he realised he would need one if he wanted accomplish his lifelong dream of getting his private flying licence.

Despite trying out several types from the NHS, the motivational speaker soon discovered they weren’t going to do the job, so he set out to make his own – designing and building it all from scratch.

Now, after almost a year hard at work, Steven, who fixes vintage jukeboxes in his spare time, has a working prototype which was signed off by an aviation medical examiner two weeks ago – and he reckons it makes him look like RoboCop.

This means he will be able finally get his solo flying hours and, all being well, his licence.

At the age of 18 in 1982, a mid-air crash on his bike left Steven critically ill with damaged lungs, spleen and liver, a broken leg and most crucially, a severed arm.

His torn-off limb was found 100 metres away, too damaged to reattached, and his missing body part changed his life forever.

Steven, from Leeds, West Yorks., said: “The day of the accident was the day my life changed for ever, but surprisingly it was a positive thing.

“As I lay in hospital I’d been told I’d lost my arm but I didn’t believe it as I could still ‘feel’ it.

“It wasn’t until a nurse took me into the bathroom for the first time that I realised the truth. But, as I looked in the mirror a wave of euphoria washed over me.

“I walked out of that bathroom a new person. I had gone in as a spotty, ugly, shy, boy with no confidence and walked out as a strong young man who had already survived against all the odds.”

Despite being so afraid of flying as a young man he had to have a course of hypnotherapy to even board a plane, on a whim Steven applied to the Flying Scholarships for Disabled People (FSDP) – and in 2012, was accepted.

But when he started flying in 2012, the prosthetic limb he had fell off each time he tried to operate the joystick, making flying as a one-armed pilot impossible.

Undaunted, he scrapped the false arm, and decided he would solve the problem himself.

He suspended his lessons until he could make himself a new arm that was up to the job.

He tried out two arms the NHS had given him but found he couldn’t use them to fly. He had flown co-pilot for several months without a prosthetic, but he needed the new arm to fly solo.

Steven believes that a number of ‘unique features’ make his #200 arm stand out from anything else at present.

He said: “I basically bought a milling machine and a lathe and started making components out of aluminium and putting them together.

“It has all been made by me, nothing is shop bought. I actually had to design some parts because they didn’t exist before.

“It has a very special shoulder socket that I have a patent on now, I also had to design a special jacket so that arm can fit over it.

“It looks pretty impressive. I look a bit like RoboCop.”

Steven explained that his arm has a quick-release shoulder socket, which means if he gets in trouble he can get out of his arm quickly.

“People don’t think about getting out of them quickly but you don’t want to be stuck if you are in trouble in a plane.

“It also has positive locking on the shoulder and it can fully rotate as well.”

Steven said the unique arm took him around 12 months to put together – but he took his time as he was hoping the arms on offer by the NHS might have fit the bill.

He added: “I’ve spoken to lots of different groups about how everyone is capable of overcoming obstacles and building their own future.

“I say to them, if I can achieve all of these things with one arm, what are you capable of achieving with two?”

“I’ve met people who had obstacles in their way which didn’t exist, just like my right arm. It’s just a question of overcoming them.

“With passion, determination and the right attitude you can achieve anything you put your mind to.”

Steven now need to fly ten hours solo and carry out various navigation tests before he is a fully-qualified pilot.

What To Buy This Spring

Military, spring, fashion, what to wear, what to buy

After what feels like the longest winter in history spring is finally here. This means two things: warmer weather and new clothes. It’s hard to know which one is more exciting. To get you in the mood we have put together a shopping guide to give you some inspiration. From the 1970s to mesh dresses, we give you the lowdown on the trends to keep in mind when you are shopping for your spring wardrobe.

Yellow

Yellow is in this season. In fact, yellow is the only colour to be seen in this season. If you think it won’t work for you then don’t worry. There is a shade of yellow that will suit every complexion. Choose between canary, amber, marigold or saffron. Just figure out your skin’s undertone and then find the hue that suits it.

The 1970s

The 1970s are back in a big way. Think hippy and 1970s Marrakech. Long, billowing dresses are right on trend, think luxury bohemian. Floral patterns are a given, especially on shirts. Brown coats and suede also featured heavily. Don’t be scared to clash and add a scarf.

Black And White

Monochrome was a huge trend on the catwalk. There were a lot of black and white suits, a node to one of the original glamorous girls, Bianca Jagger. Lanvin, Giambattista Valli and Céline all sent black and white suits down the catwalk.

Denim

Denim never goes out of fashion but this season jeans are baggy and cropped. Gucci meanwhile sent models down the catwalk in a little cowgirl dress which gave a nod to the trend without making you look like you just stepped off the ranch. Burberry on the other hand choose contrasting suede panels on their classic trench shape.

Shirtdresses

Shirtdresses may be a functional classic but this season they are also in. The classic shape was given many twists on the catwalk. Think drop waists and high slits. It is both tame and sexy. Shirtdresses go with everything, they can be either functional or glammed up for the evening. Either way, it’s a wardrobe classic.

Military

Nope, not time to join the army. Military is big this season, but don’t worry: it is completely wearable. Khaki may have hit the catwalk over 40 years ago but it is still a classic and is back in a big way. The olive drab hue is best and the catwalk went mad for military-style coats and dresses. Take inspiration from the suede khaki pieces at Chanel’s feminist protest. Ralph Lauren went for safari-style military glamour and Marc Jacobs went for a sexy silhouette.

Mesh.

Rita Ora caused a stir at the Vanity Fair Oscar party wearing a nearly-naked black mesh dress. Heidi Klum, Gigi Hadid and Irina Shayk also followed the trend at the Academy Awards after party. This one is only for the brave and you may want to tone it down for the daytime. You can give a nod to the trend without flashing anyone.

Grill Market Lomax Review

For those healthy bunnies in West London, there is a new place in Chelsea to fill your body up with the best British produce. This is the second Grill Market site and it is situated on the ground floor of the Lomax’s flagship location. All the meat is free range, British and bred to the strictest welfare standards. Fish carries the MSC certificate and all the veg is supplied by Covent Garden. This is a unique collaboration with Lomax Chelsea and I would definitely pop in as the food is not just healthy, but also delicious. There is strictly no membership policy so anyone can drop in. Everything is free from gluten, dairy and refined sugar whenever possible. I had the free range spiced chicken with pomegranate glaze and a mix of all of the salads. It was yummy and I will definitely be going back.

We will also be reviewing an exercise class soon, so watch out for that.

Parts & Labour Whitechapel Restaurant Review

Parts and Labour is the new restaurant that has just opened in Whitechapel within the Qbic London City Hotel. Parts & Labour serves modern British food and offers all day dining within a cool and vibrant space. The decor is fresh and funky, featuring Scandinavian design influences. Channelling the Jewish heritage of the Whitechapel area, Parts & Labour also serves an array of traditional Jewish dishes such as Toasted Rueben (a hot salt beef sandwich, with sauerkraut and Swiss cheese), Chicken soup with dumplings and Sabich (flat bread topped with egg, aubergine and salad).

My colleague, Paloma, and I take our seats and I order a coke. Paloma goes for a Spanish Rioja which smells amazing. She likes it. The menu looks great and it takes us a while to decide. In the end I go for something traditional: Ham & Cheddar Croquettes with Herb Mayonnaise and Paloma has the Chicken Liver Pate, Apple Chutney and Brioche. The chicken liver is creamy and soft with a delicate hint of metallic flavours. It has little chunks of onion and spread over the sweet, sticky and toasted brioche, with a lick of chutney combined gives all the right textures and tastes. My croquettes are delicious, the filling is perfect and they are just the right size. The herb mayonnaise is gorgeous and goes perfectly with the croquettes.

For our mains I have the 6oz Cheeseburger, Onion Marmalade and Chips and Paloma has the Salmon Fishcake, Buttered Spinach and Brown Shrimp Butter Sauce. My burger is AMAZING. Really good. The onion marmalade goes perfectly and you can’t go wrong with chips. The tomato ketchup comes in a cool, retro tomato. The salmon fishcake was beautifully browned and fluffy inside. The sauce was delicious, salty butter fused with spinach.

For dessert we have the Apple & Rhubarb Crumble with Custard and Chocolate Marquise with Prunes, Pistachio and Meringue. The crumble is crispy and sweet which complimented the sour taste of the rhubarb. It is tasty indeed. The Chocolate Marquise is something to behold: I don’t normally order anything with prunes or pistachio but this dish is amazing. The Chocolate Marquise is divine, the pistachio mousse is mouth-watering, the meringue is perfect and the prune sauce is good. It works well together and is a really wonderful desert. I want to eat it again.

The food is great, the hotel is quirky and cool, and the service is excellent. We loved Parts & Labour. I might even go again despite living on the opposite side of London.

I tag my friend Paola Berta to do her own video.

caudaliereviewpolyphenolc15

Caudalie launched a new anti-oxidant, anti-wrinkle, skincare range called Polyphenol C15 in 2014. Developed for busy, urban women with fast paced life. Pollution, stress and an unhealthy lifestyle are the daily factors which cause free radical damage and lead to skin ageing. I reviewed their Broad Spectrum SPF20 Anti-Wrinkle Protect Fluid, Anti-Wrinkle Protect Cream Broad Spectrum SPF20, Anti-Wrinkle Defense Serum and Anti-Wrinkle Eye & Lip Cream.

The active ingredients in this skincare range are a combination of the two most effective antioxidants on the market, Grape-seed Polyphenols (a Caudalie patent) and stabilised Vitamin C. Starting from 30 the skin begins to age. The skin weakens, draw from its reserves and takes longer to recover completely. In short, it oxidises. Great. So far so depressing. The good news though is that with Polyphenol C15 the skin cells are completely repaired and protected. Can the products help? Let’s find out.

Broad Spectrum SPF20 Anti-Wrinkle Protect Fluid

I am obsessed with SPF. I wear it everyday. Even in winter. I think this has helped as many people think I am younger than I am. This awesome multi-purpose product is an anti-oxidant shield and keeps skin protected all day long. It works on existing wrinkles and stops new ones forming over time. It is also a broad spectrum sunscreen. What more could you want?

Anti-Wrinkle Protect Cream Broad Spectrum SPF20

Uses Grape-seed, Polyphenols and stabilised Vitamin C to give a plump, hydrated skin. It neutralises day-to-day attacks, plumps skin and restores lipid balance. This is a great cream that smells great and protects against dehydration lines and skin tightness. It treats dry skin, as well as protecting skin against daily aggressors. I love it.

Anti-Wrinkle Defense Serum

This is the product with the highest concentrate of Polyphenol C15 in the entire range. It is deep and intense to correct wrinkles and reinforce the skin’s natural defence system. This wonderful serum leaves skin smoother and brighter. It also smells great and leaves skin soft. Sigh.

Anti-Wrinkle Eye & Lip Cream

This gel cream fights oxidation, wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness. Phew. In fact, this awesome gel-cream addresses every issue to do with the eye and lip contours. Its formula also incorporates an instantly tightening fern extract, Matrixyl 3000 (a combination of peptides) to boost collagen synthesis, Horse Chestnut extract to smooth, and Licorice extract to decongest. Finally, soothing Calendula and Witch Hazel add even more softness. It instantly works on dark circles (my main skin nemesis) and the eye contour is smoothed. Leaves you with brighter eyes day after day. Good stuff.

These products are great because they keep up with our demanding lifestyle. Up early and to bed late. Being the successful career women, wife and mother. It all takes its toll and our skincare has to keep up. Thankfully, this amazing new range from Caudalie does. I love it and will be using it again.

The  Polyphenol C15 is available from April at caudalie.com in Caudalie stores.

Mayfair Pizza Co Restaurant Review

The Mayfair Pizza Co is in a truly beautiful part of Mayfair, Lancashire Court. One of those little hidden gems of London. I arrived on a sunny day with a friend to review. The restaurant is beautiful, refined and classy. It is a happy and relaxing setting. I order a coke and my friend has some water and we order some olives to get us going. The olives are delicious and fresh and come with salted almonds.

To start I have the Dorset Crab Salad with Apple, Avocado and my friend has the Salt & Pepper Squid with Saffron Aioli. My crab salad is very unique and comes in a crab shell. It has lots of different textures and ingredients that go together wonderfully. It is unique and tastes great. My friend, Lynn, is a fan of her squid and says it is good. She would have liked a plate however. Overall presentation is great and the service is first-class.

What we don’t have for our mains is the hottest pizza in town. The Mayfair Pizza Co have the spiciest pizza going at the moment. I didn’t try it as I am heavily pregnant and didn’t want to go into labour but it sure looked good. Read all about it via the above link. Executive Chef Michael Lecouter’s latest creation is must-try for any discerning pizza connoisseur.

For our mains I have the Chicken Milanese with Rosemary Potatoes, Red Onion Jam & Tender Stem Broccoli. Lynn has the

Fiorentina pizza which comes with Mascarpone, Spinach, Soft Boiled Egg, Parmesan, Ex Virgin Olive Oil. My chicken is good, the rosemary potatoes are perfect and so yummy, the red onion jam goes well with everything and is delicious, as is the tender stem broccoli which is perfectly cooked. Lynn loves her pizza. The soft boiled egg, rather than the traditional fried egg on top throws us initially, especially as it is cold. The pizza is good however and the soft boiled egg gives a different touch.

For dessert I have a Trio of Gelato. The ice cream is delicious. It tastes home made and if I wasn’t so full I could have had seconds and thirds. Lynn wimps out and doesn’t have dessert. In her defence she is going swimming later and I have eaten so much I would sink.
