Lovelace DVD Review | Film

lovelace film reviewI have (proudly) never seen Deepthroat. Neither am I a fan of, nor watch porn, but even I know who Linda Lovelace is. I also have to say that I was deeply uncomfortable when, prior to this film being released, topless pictures of Amanda Seyfried were released to the press. This film is about a women who was raped, exploited and forced into porn; so a film about a women being exploited, which is promoted by a women being exploited is just uncomfortable. So it was with trepidation that I decided to review it.

To be fair, I think the film is good and harrowing. Showing Linda Lovelace as the victim I believe she was. The script is great, the acting is top-notch and the film does justice to the storyline. But I do think the underwater shot of Amanda Seyfried swimming in just a pair of pants was unwarranted. More thought should have been given in a film which is about rape, porn and exploitation. Some of Lovelace is very hard to watch, without giving away too much, Lovelace’s abuseive husband, Chuck played brilliantly by Peter Sarsgaard, beats her, rapes her and even sells her. He’s the one who gets her into porn, almost destroying her in the process. A brilliant and almost unrecognisable Sharon Stone plays Mum, a religious, traditional woman who find it hard to deal with her daughter’s work, and in the end feels guilty for turning her away when her daughter confesses her husband beats her, “What did you do to make him beat you? There must have been a reason.” Hard to believe a mother would say this to her child, and the scene where dad, played by the always amazing Robert Patrick, talks to his daughter, confessing he has seen her movie and had to walk out, “Is it something we did?…I had to walk out, that wasn’t my little girl up there. I didn’t recognise her” he weeps down the phone.

This is not a film to watch when feeling fragile and we had a male writer even refuse to watch it (he thought the topless pictures of Amanda Seyfried that were released were inappropriate). In the end I do think this is a good film that tells the story well, it just should have been less exploitative. Some of it made for uncomfortable viewing. But it does at least show how destructive porn is. A few people seemed annoyed that the film is from Lovelace’s point-of-view but to me that seems obvious: this is her story, but less of Amanda Seyfried naked next time would make their story stronger, and do more justice to Linda Lovelace.

Miley Cyrus ‘Wrecking Ball’ Video Gets Over 20 Million Hits. Watch The Video

If you think Miley Cyrus’s VMA Twerking performance was raunchy, (and let’s face it, it was, Especially grinding into Robin Thicke who seems such a fan of disrobed women), then watch her ‘Wrecking Ball’ Video. You have probably seen it already. If not then you will see Cyrus completely naked riding a wrecking ball.

Miley Cyrus, wrecking ball, naked, music, video,

We like her music, but we would like it a lot more if she did not exploit herself. What do you think? Should she put some clothes on and let the music speak for itself? Or is she just really good at publicity?

Calendar Girls | Theatre Review

Tim Firth’s phenomenally successful Calendar Girls has been performed on stage and movie screens across the globe but its run at the local Ealing theatre hut, Questors, is where the drama really comes to life.

Even without Helen Mirren or an expendable budget, the Questors simple props and am-dram cast came together to offer a moving, personable, and simply fantastic adaptation.

After all, simple props such as baked buns and flower-pots were the only items used to protect the women’s modesty for the calendar photo shoot.

From the opening scene of the Women’s Institute partaking in tai chi to the moment they decide to strip for the famous Yorkshire charity calendar, the bonds of friendship are evident both on and off the stage.

Despite the different personalities, from loud Cora, to life-experienced Jessie and the snobbish Celia, once Annie’s husband dies from Leukaemia, they harmonise to raise money for a communal sofa for the hospital which looked after John Clark.

And as the group debate the morality of an artistically ‘nude’ calendar (as opposed to the more common ‘naked’), we shared their every musing from lack of confidence, embarrassment to final empowerment and financial success.

Hannah Whiteoak who plays Ruth was a particular treat to witness.

Her slightly timid, introverted character was played out to comedic effect which balanced the heavier plot of illness and death.

And just when you’re not sure whether she’ll take part in the photo-shoot, she outshines all the ladies as she confidently stretches out her body on the table as fruit envelopes her humility.

Directed by Rachel Knightley (her first production), there were two scenes which really impressed.

In a sombre moment when John’s dying, the women all group together and stand around his wheelchair.

As his lines fade and the lights are dimmed, Annie’s lines overlap John’s as he slowly walks away into the shadows of the stage. It was very touching.

Another clever use of the set was when the WI received all the fan mail after sales of the calendar rocketed both in Yorkshire and abroad.

Letters were dropped to the floor from stage scaffolding above which was very novel.

Despite its amateur status, this is a fine production from Questors and a promising start for new director Rachel Knightley. It had me laughing and caught me crying at all the right moments.

Calendar Girls is running at Questors till Sat 10 Nov. To book tickets, visit: http://www.questors.org.uk/event.aspx?id=364

Plump & Shine Lip Gloss | Beauty Review

I am very fussy about lip gloss. I don’t like it to be too sticky. I like it to stay in place. So did Plump & Shine Lip Gloss live up to my exacting standards. Let’s find out….

I tried the nude colour. It is a good colour with a really nice tone. Plump & Shine also plumps your lips up (the clue is in the name) so if you want some more volume on your pout this is the lip gloss to try. It won’t make you look like Jackie Stallone (thank god!) but it gives a nice little boost.

This is before the lip gloss.

After I put it on it stays put. It is long lasting, not too sticky (my bug bear with other lip glosses) and it looks great on. It did seem to plump my lips up too. I felt a tingly sensation.

And this is after:

This is after.

Wearing the lip gloss.

I really like this lip gloss. It is not drying and it makes the most of your lips. A little goes a long way and it stays put for quite a while. It is subtle and makes your lips look gorgeous.

‘Candy’ Plump & Shine is a very light pink similar to the shades seen on the catwalk at Louis Vuitton, whilst ‘Seduce’, a hot pink gloss but not too dark, is similar to the colours we saw at DKNY.

Plump & Shine does not contain alcohol so is non-drying

Cost: £19.95

Shades: Candy (light pink) / Seduce (hot pink)

Lara Pulver: “People Think I’ll Keep Getting Naked”.

After her nude turn in Sherlock Holmes Lara Pulver says she has been “inundated” with nude offers. The episode where she striped while playing Irene Adler became the most watched show ever on the BBC iPlayer.

Now the 31-year-old is saying she keeps getting offered nude roles.

She told the Radio Times: ‘I take my clothes off for a minute and a half and everyone suddenly goes, “Oh great, she’s an actress who will take her clothes off. We can’t get Kate Winslet. Let’s see if Lara Pulver will do a swinger movie”.’

Pulver insisted that the scene was not ‘nudity for nudity’s sake’.

Lara also said she may return to Sherlock Holmes. She is in a new show; Camouflage.

Hot Tights For Summer.

I love tights and stockings. They are such a brilliant way to update your look. Frost has sourced some cool tights for this season and reviewed them for you.

Black Opaque tights.

You really cannot go wrong with Black Opaque tights. These Charnos 60d ones are comfortable (a rare thing in some tights) the waistband doesn’t hurt and they look great. Full marks.

Charnos Simple Bare Tights in Nude. These are 7D with the strength of 15 denier. The packaging says that they let legs breathe and they do. The tights feel very nice. They are good quality and they look good. They don’t snag easily and the waistband doesn’t hurt. A big thing for me. Some tights seem to cut you in half at the waist, and that’s not healthy.

The Ava Hold Up has been made to celebrate 75 years of Charnos. It has a Leaf Print Back-seam Hold-up. Which is Silver.

These are elegantly sexy. Really lovely hold ups that stay on and look good. The band is comfy to. The silver leaf print back-seam is a beautiful detail. They are elegant and fashionable. These really do stay up all day. No slipping or sliding.

Black Hold ups. Fan net design. Satin lace top.
These are far too comfy for something so beautiful. The band is good around the leg too. They stay up well.

Charnos Killer Figure opaque control tights. Tones bum, tum and thighs. Smooths your shape. Comfort waistband. Lifts the bottom.

These are slightly hard to get into but are very comfortable for control tights. The do smooth out your shape. It may be in my head but I did seem a little more toned the next day. They are good tights which look good on. I don’t feel like all of my internal organs are being squeezed together.

Stocking tights: Stripe mock hold up design tights.

These are huge at the moment; Tights that look like stockings. Lots of celebrities may have been seen wearing them but the look is still fresh. These mock stocking tights look great and are good quality. The are tamer than some of the ones I have seen, more elegant. They are both wearable and glamorous.

3 pair pack of socks. Eros pink mix. One size.

And let’s add some socks in. These Charnos cotton socks are comfortable and look good. They Eros pink mix is very sweet too. They are just very cute. The socks are good quality and don’t cut off your circulation.

What tights will you be wearing this year?
