NYC Fashion Week Round Up: Kaelen AW14

Kaelen AW14 Inspiration:

The inspiration began with the softness of nature. Natural elements that mix with innovative and technical is a theme that has been explored throughout past collections and it carries into the AW14 collection. The collection draws on ideas of romance and minimalism while continuing the tradition of androgynous tailoring. Shapes are softer but exaggerated. Graphic, sharp fabrics are mixed with soft, abstract prints. The collection features a new developed print that is meant to feel both digital and natural at the same time. Taking inspiration from mohair textiles and organic mossy textures to create something pixelated and abstract. The print is seen throughout the collection on sheer tulle in black and white as well as stretch cotton against a colour palette of deep purple, silver lavender, pink and orangey red.

Syria: Humanity in Conflict

‘The reason I do it is because first and foremost I am Syrian and I can’t stand to see my people suffer.’ Hamza, Syrian Arab Red Crescent volunteer, December 2011

Photographs by an award winning Syrian photographer that reveal the impact of conflict on humanitarian volunteers in the country, are being unveiled at IWM North, part of Imperial War Museums, in Manchester.

The powerful images explore the experiences of Syrian civilians and humanitarian volunteers who place their lives on the line, almost three years since the outbreak of conflict in March 2011.

Created in association with the British Red Cross, this small, emotive display at v shows images by Syrian – Italian photographer Ibrahim Malla.

The free display features the comments of local volunteers for the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC), reflecting on their motivations to become a volunteer and the risks they take as they stay in Syria to respond to the current conflict and humanitarian crisis.

The British Red Cross and SARC are part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the world’s largest independent humanitarian network.

Malla is currently working in and around Syria for the International Federation of the Red Cross. This free display contains his most recent work. Malla has previously photographed many humanitarian crises. He has exhibited in Syria, Italy, Madrid, Paris, London, Geneva, Sydney, China, Germany and Scotland and won six international awards during his career.

SARC volunteers have been at the front line of the humanitarian response in Syria since fighting erupted. Many SARC staff and volunteers have been killed; many more have been injured, kidnapped or detained. Ambulances have been fired upon or in some cases stolen.

Across the country, thousands of SARC volunteers continue to provide essential assistance to those affected by the crisis.

SARC volunteers and staff are delivering a wide range of life-saving aid to almost 3 million people each month: food parcels, blankets, mattresses, hygiene kits, kitchen sets, first aid and ambulance services, fixed and mobile health clinics, psycho-social support services for children and their families, water and sanitation. They also support temporary shelters in schools, offices, and public buildings.

Ibrahim Malla said: “My photos show the tragedy of the conflict with a message of hope – showing the hard job that the Red Cross and the Red Crescent volunteers are doing, always helping everybody in respect of our principle of neutrality. This is the message that I started to carry around the world, to let everybody know and see the bravery of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent volunteers. I feel this is my duty to honour my friends who sacrificed their life.”

Graham Boxer, Director of IWM North, said: ‘From images of aid distributions to the evacuation of 2,000 people from a besieged town in October 2013, Malla’s images portray the role, dedication and bravery of these volunteers in Syria today.’

Miley Cyrus Almost Unrecognisable On W Cover: Pictures And Quotes

Miley Cyrus looks almost unrecognisable on the cover of W Magazine. Miley is on the cover of the March 2014 issue.

W-March-2014-Cover_miley-cyrus_mert-marcus

Shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot exclusively for W, the pictures are very high fashion and show a different side to 21-year-old Miley, with bleached eyebrows and a blonde bob.

W-March-2014_miley-cyrus_glamour_3feb14_mert-marcus_b_960x1440

Inside Miley is interviewed by Ronan Farrow. Here are the top quotes.

On her parents: “I never had, like, a nanny that took care of me. My mom always fed me breakfast, lunch, and dinner. My dad, like, he’s the most trusting human in the world. He trusts everybody, basically, until they fu*k him over. And my mom, too, holds no grudges. She’ll let someone, like, fu*k her over twice, and then she’ll let it go, and then she kind of forgets about it. And I used to be like that. And now I just keep it in the back of my mind.”

On the haters: “I don’t give a sh*t. I’m not Disney, where they have, like, an Asian girl, a black girl, and a white girl, to be politically correct, and, like, everyone has bright-coloured T-shirts. You know, it’s like, I’m not making any kind of statement. Anyone that hates on you is always below you, because they’re just jealous of what you have.”

On Godmother Dolly Parton: “What I love about Dolly is she says hi to the person that’s doing the catering on set before she goes and says hi to the cast.”

On her upbringing: “We never were inside, and we never wore shoes. I think it’s why I like wearing no clothes so much and I’m always naked.”

On why her reluctance to trust has made her stop dating: “Guys watch too much porn. Those girls don’t exist. They’re not real girls. And that’s like us watching romance movies. That’s girl porn, because, like, those guys do not exist. The kind that do exist just try too hard with me, and it’s just like, ‘I don’t need you to impress me. I don’t want you to, like, take me to fancy restaurants.’ I hate sitting down for dinner! You don’t have to do that to me! You don’t have to take me on trips! I literally just want to chill here! That’s why I’m, like, not trying to jump into a relationship…I love my music so much, and I love what I’m doing so much that that has become my other half—rather than another person. And so, yeah, I feel like I had to be able to be 100 percent”
