Hakkasan Chinese New Year 2016 Review

Hakkasan Chinese New Year 2016 Review8 Hakkasan Chinese New Year 2016 Review9 Hakkasan Chinese New Year 2016 Review2Hakkasan exudes elegance, sophistication and charm from the moment you step in to its Mayfair arms and its style translates seamlessly into the signature dishes.

As part of the Chinese New Year celebrations, Hakkasan’s launched a special ‘year of the monkey’ menu priced at £88.88 per person, available until 22 February.

Each dish has been beautifully crafted by executive head chef Tong Chee Hwee and each symbolises luck, joy and prosperity for the year ahead.

Once settled, diners are greeted with a fabulously smooth and refreshing cocktail with Eldorado 3yrs rum, Amontillado sherry, banana, guava, lime, agave syrup and walnut.

Our starter of double boiled fresh ginseng and chicken soup with bamboo pith and wolfberry, was delicate with knotty cubes of tofu and the wolfberry was similar to cranberry.

It was soon followed by the Japanese wagyu beef with pine nut in a golden cup – delicious, crispy dices of meat which glistened in the crunchy shells.

As the har gau scallop shumai, Chinese chive dumpling, duck and yam bean dumpling was brought to our table, I couldn’t wait to sample them all.

The scallop was fresh and chewy and the duck dumpling was tender and more-ish.

Our table among the London business-types was decked with the main dishes, including wok-fry lobster in spicy truffle sauce which filled the palette with a trio of textures of crispy onion, slippery exotic mushrooms and leathery-like feel of the distinct flavour of the crustacean.

The pipa duck had a crusty skin and the meat was beautifully tender and flavoursome.

My favourite dish of the evening was the grilled Chilean seabass in honey – it melted in the mouth leaving a sweet and smoky aftertaste.

As we alternated between the main dishes of meat and fish, we also enjoyed the stir fry hericeum mushroom with lotus root asparagus and lily bulb in black pepper.

It was pleasing to the eye and the asparagus was lightly salted and cooked perfectly while the mushroom was surprisingly hard compared to the normal fungi we’re used to.

All the dishes were accompanied with a dried scallop and crabmeat fried rice.

The evening concluded with a soy caramel banana delice with chocolate and peanut. It was beautifully presented, sweet, cooling and a light touch to end our dinner experience.

The Hateful Eight – Film Review

the_hateful_eightRolling in at a mammoth three hours and seven minutes, the aptly titled The Hateful Eight is a film that in many ways will divide audiences. Those that love Quentin Tarantino’s style of film-making; the long build ups, exaggerated sword plays of dialogue and immediate violence, the no expense spared approach to making scenes look and feel authentic will no doubt rejoice here. But for those who were perhaps looking for a quick fix of action seen in examples such as Django Unchained and the Kill Bill series are likely to be disappointed or lack the endurance to see this film through to the end. It follows then that this film can be seen as a blessing and a shame in equal measure.

Shot in Ultra Panavision 70 which is apparently super widescreen, a long, and I mean long intro follows a horse and carriage through what must be a the bleakest snow storm. Yes, it is almost ten minutes before we actually get any dialogue. Only Tarantino could do that and not break a sweat. But when people do start speaking its then that you appreciate the depth and texture that he places within his characters.

John Ruth (Kurt Russell) is a bounty hunter carrying his charge Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh) to a town called Red Rock. He never fails to bring his quarry in alive rather than dead so that they can be hanged by the state. Before long he is joined by Major Marquis Warren (played by an incredibly on form Samuel L Jackson) who after some convincing is permitted to share the stagecoach to Red Rock. They are soon after joined by Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins); allegedly Red Rock’s new sheriff, who makes it clear that in return for riding on the stage-coach he’ll ensure that justice will be done on arrival.

The worsening storm forces them to break their journey at Minnie’s; an isolated shop that they intend to use as a stop-over point and it’s here that four more faces join the crowd, potentially all eager for a share of the bounty that is on Daisy Domergue’s head. They are Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern), an old Confederate general, Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), a taciturn cattle-hand, Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), a flamboyant hangman, and Bob (Demián Bichir), the shop’s temporary Mexican caretaker. Minnie herself however is nowhere to be seen. This sets the scene for a set-up where no one can be trusted and anything can happen.

It’s here where the dialogue goes into overdrive and Tarantino really goes to work building and creating tension. However, it has to be said that it is a shame that it is such a slow build up; a growing crescendo which perhaps would have fared better if the characters had redeeming qualities. The reality is I found I could find little empathy with any one of the characters, they all had behaviours which I found distasteful, but perhaps that is the whole point. The second act plays out almost like an Agatha Christie novel; largely a quest to find out who is behind it all. The characters try and suss each other out. Flashbacks occur; who was where and when this or that happened and people try to talk their way out of being in the guilty frame.

What embellishes this is the fine cast. Very rarely do you find films where every actor shines. The only one I can think of right now where that occurred recently was in The Wolf of Wall Street and again it was because the director was very credible so the cast gave it their all. Here it is the same. They all implicitly trust Quentin so they hit their roles with vigour, the end result is stunning, at times riveting and in so many ways simply wonderful.

Personally, I am not a fan of long films. My friends were divided in equal measure between loving and hating this film. However, it has to be said from Tarantino this film seems intimate, like a personal project he really deliberated, stressed over, savoured and desired to share with his fans. The end result is something only he could realistically pull off at such quality and regardless of whether you love it or hate it you have to admit it’s a fine piece of work.

Four exciting Riojas for winter

rioja,Vina real

Riojas from Vina Real

The picture above shows two empty bottles of Rioja sitting on my desk. The reason why they are empty is that we drank the lot over Christmas – and very good they were too!

Rioja is one of the classic wines of Spain. Made primarily from Tempranillo grapes, it has a strong, rich flavour of berries and a slightly leathery smell. It is a wonderful robust wine, and just the thing to drink in the evening, when there is a slight chill in the air. It can be drunk by itself – preferably in front of a log fire – or it can accompany strong beef stews or slices of Jamon Iberico, Manchego cheese and rich olives. It’s a macho wine from the land of bullfighters!

I was fortunate enough to be sent four bottles of wine from Vina Real. They represent a wide range of Riojas, so I thought it would be fun to compare them.

The first one was a Vina Real Rosada. (£11.05) from Majestic. This is unconventional – a rose wine made with 15 per cent tempranillo and 85 per cent viura – a white grape grown extensively in the Rioja region. I wasn’t greatly impressed with this one. It was a brave experiment, but I thought the flavour was just a bit thin and it didn’t suit the Rioja style of wine.

The Vina Real Crianza 2011 (£11.60 Lea and Sandeman) was a much better buy. Crianza has to be aged for at least two years old. This had lovely rich flavours of plum and vanilla. We drank it with meatballs and rice and loved it!

The Vina Real Rioja Reserva 2010 is only available from independent outlets, price £18.95. A Rioja Reserva has to be at least three years old. This means that the tannins have softened, so it’s not so sharp. It is gentler on the palate. This was sumptuously fruity, nicely oaked and had a long finish.

Best of all was the Vina Real Gran Reserva (£28.85 Majestic). A Rioja Gran Reserva has to be least five years old. This one had lovely scents of candied fruit and coffee. Save this one for wine aficionados, who can really appreciate it! All in all, a great selection and worth hunting out.

Real Easy Wonderoos Reusable Nappy Review

Real Easy - the washable nappy manufactured by Wonderoos

The words ‘reusable nappy’ can strike fear into a parents heart. We know it is better for the environment and the purse but in a sleep-deprived zombie state we tend to go for the easy option. That is until you try one and it isn’t as hard as you think. Especially with Real Easy – the washable nappy manufactured by Wonderoos. The all-in-one, one-size pocket nappy comes with lots of buttons to make sure it fits your baby well, the design is beautiful and gender neutral. The nappy even feels great. It feels silky-soft on the outside and the inserts also feel nice and are comfortable for baby. The soft micro fleece lining keeps baby feeling comfy and dry, while the thirsty soakers take care of the wetness.

Each Wonderoos V3 Pocket Nappy is the equivalent to approximately 300 disposable nappies. One size fits 8-35lbs. You just adjust to fit from birth to potty. They even have unique girl/boy settings on inserts. The nappy is a little bulky so not all clothes will look streamlined on baby. However we can honestly say that we love this nappy. Great for baby, great for the environment and it saves money. What more could you want? This nappy has won many awards and rightly so. Very impressive. Frost loves.  Wonderoos One-Size Pocket Nappy can be bought here.

Gigaset G-Tag Review By Tracy Baines

Gigaset G-Tag Review By Tracy Baines1

Keep track of your valuables this Christmas with the new Gigaset G-tag. Using Bluetooth technology, this clever device can track down important items such as keys, handbags or even your car, by electronically syncing to a simple smartphone app.

The G-tag also alerts users if they’ve left somewhere without their ‘tagged’ items. If the device moves more than a pre-set distance, they receive a notification on their phone to help find missing possessions within 10m.

The app was easy to install and ready to go.

I think it’s fabulous if you’re like me and can’t remember where you parked your car – especially this time of the year.

We were burgled recently and the thieves took my handbag and purse – and I loved that handbag. I’m thinking of sewing one of these into the lining so that if, heaven forbid, the same thing happens again I at least might get my handbag back.

If my children were still small I think I’d be slipping them on rucksacks, lunch boxes and PE bags. How many hours would that have saved?

It comes in different colours – great for putting on a key ring and makes it easy to find in the bottom of your bag.

Available in black, white, orange, red and green.

MONEY PIZZA RESPECT By Josh ‘The Fat Jew’ Ostrovsky Book Review

MONEY PIZZA RESPECT By Josh ‘The Fat Jew’ Ostrovsky

Social media superstar @thefatjew has written a searingly honest and completely hilarious autobiographical book. It is amusing and fun: full of hilarious stories and humorous pictures. Ever wanted to see the author in a beef jerky bikini? Of course you do. There may even be an inappropriate (accidental?) shot of the authors, ahem, testicles. There is also lots of drug taking so…don’t try this at home kids, or anywhere else. Just read about Josh Ostrovsky a.k.a. The Fat Jew doing it instead. That is the best way. This book will not be to everyone’s taste but the author has laid himself bare- literally and figuratively, and that is commendable.

Money, Pizza, Respect is available here. Josh Ostrovsky a.k.a. The Fat Jew has written a book about himself. It will be the funniest book you will ever read.
