Level 42 – Sirens Tour – Gliding Back To Retro!

Sirens-Vinyl-EP-front[1]get-attachment[1]308[1]

In a world where white and a sparse aesthetic are dominant, a hit of disco styling works as the ideal antidote. The 80s disco period evokes memories of fun and glamour – jumpsuits, bomber jackets and metallic stack heels… good times.
In 2012, Level 42 celebrated the 25th anniversary of ‘Running In The Family’ which was the all-important album bringing tracks like ‘Lessons In Love’ and ‘Children Say’ to notoriety. This year, be prepared to awaken your Level 42 senses with the latest ‘Sirens’ tour, dance-oriented retro but bang up-to-date with a rightful place in the here and now.
Whether you’re listening to a ‘Sirens’ track in a Nikki Beach bar or a Mancunian nightclub, front-row of a slick Chanel runway show or just nipping to Morrisons in your Corsa, this 6-track album offers one-size-fits-all, irresistible easy listening vibes with clever atmospheric mixes by John Morales and Simon T (Ourra), taking Level 42 full circle, back to their roots.

Level 42 successfully brought disco and dance to the mainstream but many of their older songs lie dormant. Mark told me “lots of songs never got to see the light of day… we’re bringing them out!” so hardened fans will recollect and newbies will be in for a treat… old and new tracks seamlessly stitched together like a pair of Dolce & Gabbana legwarmers.

The band tours every couple of years and Mark King’s passion for the Level 42 fan-base is evident, his respect for their support is paramount and never taken for granted. “I am nuts about this (tour and album) and I know the fans are too.” He told me “We’re taking the lighting back to the way it was in 1988, boxes on stage with racks of lighting hoisted up on pneumatics.” Combine that with the appearance of a strong brass section featuring the fantastic saxophonist, Sean Freeman… this is going to be a long night of sweaty funk-retro-heaven!

The Giver – Movie Review

appleIs it better to give than receive?

The Giver’ is the latest in the long line of film adaptations aimed at the angst driven young adult market; the very same genre that belonged to Twilight, Hunger Games, the latest iteration of Spiderman and most recently Diversion.

The movie Divergent is an interesting comparison to make because to be honest, even though Lois Lowry’s novel The Giver was released almost 15 years before Divergent in 1993 to what some would say was more critical acclaim once you have seen Divergent you just can’t watch this film without thinking this is just another version of the same film. To excuse the pun; this film just doesn’t diverge enough.

To be fair it boasts a decorated cast led by Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep and a capable director in Patriot Games’s Phillip Noyce;  these key ingredients come together to create an incredible cocktail with what they have. But Meryl Streep in her bad girl role comes across like Kate Winslet’s evil step sister but with a whole lot less ‘aggy’, Jeff Bridges on the other hand is as enigmatic as ever but unable to really breathe given the limitations of his role.

Like many of the aforementioned films The Giver is set years after a cataclysmic event that prompted society to adopt a scheme whereby emotions are stripped and families are assembled based on character traits. When a young person leaves childhood, they are handed pre-determined roles within society. Those that don’t ‘fit’ become outcasts or ‘forgotten’; people can’t lie, the society is fashioned on order and obedience and with power comes control. Now, I don’t know about you but I’ve seen enough film adaptations to know that it is just ripe for someone who thinks differently to challenge the corruption and change the upheld views.

This task falls to none other than Jonas (Brenton Thwaites); chosen to take over the role of receiver of memory from The Giver.  He will learn everything about the world before the ‘new world order and utopia’ in order that he has the wisdom to advise the Elders in times of crisis. How will he learn you ask? Is it by reading books, in these types of utopia aren’t books banned? Of course they’re banned, No he learns through ‘mind-melds’ with The Giver, because he needs to ‘experience’ the past. Oooooh I hear you say. That’s exciting. Yes, and it is through these experiences that Jonas learns his new role comes at a cost, you see there is no such thing as love in this life, and no such thing as joy. As such he begins to experience an emotional awakening. Noyce cleverly visualizes Jonas’s epiphany by bleeding colour into black and white images, this happens in such a gradual deliberate way that it almost makes you take a double take, for example he sees the vivid red of an apple, or his love interest’s bright eyes before later seeing the sky full-on blossom into Technicolor. It’s a really nice touch.

This is one of the film’s greatest strengths, by experiencing Jonas relieving the memories of our own history the audience themselves are taken on a journey of the highs and the lows of life. It is there that the connection comes within the film as when he returns each day back to the society the blandness is almost all consuming and it is there you recognise with his plight to change things.

There are some other good supporting roles too. Katie Holmes and Alexander Skarsgård have great turns as Jonas’s parents, whilst Taylor Swift appears in hologram form as a former protégé of The Giver. Unfortunately, none of them are on screen long enough to create much of an impact.

Whilst obviously on a tighter budget than Hunger Games and Divergent, The Giver does well with its production values and costume design. Indeed if Steve Jobs is in charge of architecture up in heaven most would agree it would look like this.

The only thing I thought let the Giver down was its ending; it just lacks that visceral punch of its contemporaries. However, some would argue that it isn’t necessary; this is a touching film about love and identity; about power and responsibility not a movie actioner. It’s a nice film but I can’t help but feel it’s a shame; if this film had come out five or even ten years earlier it would probably be one of those memorable films of a lifetime. However with Hunger Games and Divergent sequels on the horizon my only fear is that this title will soon be forgotten.

Guests were welcomed on a 7-room odyssey of the senses inspired by the physical, architectural, social and gastronomic dimensions of Whisky. Among the experiences, guests entered the world’s first Whisky Weather system, a luxurious breathable cloud of JOHNNIE WALKER BLUE LABEL and after passing through the Ice Palace where an illuminated block of 10,000 year old ice awaited they witnessed the hand-charring of barrels with the use of Whisky flamethrowers.

Culinary geniuses Bompas & Parr created an exquisite banquet of mouth-watering dishes, each one uniquely crafted to celebrate and highlight the complex flavours found within Johnnie Walker Blue Label. Upon finishing the gourmet masterpiece served to guests seated at elaborately dressed long banquet tables, the duo revealed the hotly anticipated multi-sensory project they have been working on for over a year – the world’s first working Flavour Conductor; a one-of-a-kind musical instrument that brings an inimitable theatrical dimension to whisky tasting. The magnificent church organ built according to centuries of tradition combines a contemporary sound and light spectacular with the rich heritage of whisky blending, whilst each note of the instrument emphasizes the individual flavors that can be discovered in the Blue Label blend.

Following the feast, a unique, performance took place with dancers, musicians and actors, each embodying a chapter of the Johnnie Walker story and celebrating the flavor, history and heritage. The final scene took to the walls as breath-taking projections transported the guests into the center of the glass of a glass of whisky.

Jude Law, star or Johnnie Walker Blue Label’s short film ‘A Gentleman’s Wager’ closed the occasion by thanking guests and raising a glass to all with encouragement to ‘keep on walking’.

Flat coke may be the cure for Kate Middleton’s morning sickness

katemiddletonThere is a high probability that Kate Middleton will experience the same morning sickness as with her first pregnancy, say Alison Edwards – Senior Lecturer in Midwifery at Birmingham City University. In fact she has had to cancel some of her engagements already because of her acute morning sickness.

“Though there is an increased chance due to having the excessive sickness before she may well have an entirely different experience this time with little or no sickness.  Though there is no ‘cure’ for morning sickness (and certainly not hyperemesis) there are steps that can be taken to try to settle the unpleasant symptoms.”

“Though there are few sources of scientific evidence to support any ‘remedies’, making sure fluid intake is maintained is a priority. Flat coke has been found to help here as can arrowroot or ginger. Some women swear by travel bands.  Small low fat meals can help and avoiding anything spicy.  If the symptoms become excessive then medical advice must be sought as there are medications that can reduce the sickness and nausea; these do need prescribing however.

“Excessive morning sickness can make women unwell and certainly miserable, so plenty of support and rest are vital, especially if admission to hospital is required as Kate was last year. There are also support groups set up by women who have experienced hyperemesis.”

The Privileged Are Always One-Step Ahead, Right? By Josh Edwards

We have been reminded in the press recently, that the privately educated and the rich seem to get a better deal than the rest of us – but why is this?  Perhaps it is to do with the social network they are able to build. The cliché, ‘it’s not what you know but who you know’ certainly has some truth to it.

Let me give you an example. Pretend for a moment that Beatrice’s father Edward has just floated his new tech company on the NASDAQ, and made a fortune. Beatrice bumps up from a comprehensive to a private school in Windsor, where she is surrounded by oil magnate heirs and the like. Overnight she has entered a network of potential contacts. Opportunities will arise, and it is probable that Beatrice will be in a better position than the rest of us.

We cannot blame the elite and the privileged for accessing the doors that are open to them for surely we all would, in a similar position. For the majority of us, however, who are on the other side of that white picket fence, how can we compete?

For me it was about using the opportunities that arose around me. For the people who know me, the past three years of my life has been a mixture of both University and Starbucks.

While working for Starbucks I soon realised that customers from a multitude of backgrounds come into the store, in search of their caffeine fix. It became apparent to me that I could kill two birds with one stone, I could both work and network at the same time.

While some customers would rather order their coffee with a minimal amount of personal interaction, others would engage in conversation.

2

I made an effort to remember names and in time found some to be genuinely interested in my plans, even offering me opportunities to enhance my C.V and further my career. Through networking with customers, I have been offered a number of open doors, including the opportunity to write for Frost, – the online magazine you are reading now – and I have become involved with the charity Words for the Wounded (W4W), and now help look after publicity and all social media.

I have been able to talk about my work with Frost and W4W during a recent interview and it has definitely enhanced my application – and given me something different to talk about, not to mention improving my skill base and my understanding of how different organisations work.

So if you are in a similar position and work in an environment where you meet a variety of people,  have an open mind. I have found generosity from customers in spades. Are the rich and privileged one step ahead? Probably, but it doesn’t mean the rest of us are too far behind.

The play will be staged for one night at the Saatchi Gallery – the first time the space has played host to a dramatic production. Julius Caesar follows the tale of a group of conspirators who devise a plan to remove the Caesar from power. This exciting new interpretation will retain the original text but place the story against a backdrop of modern day politics. Focusing on the themes of spin, betrayal, backstabbing and power – rarely has a 16th Century play been more relevant in modern society.

Drawing inspiration from popular television shows such as House of Cards, Homeland and The Thick of It, the work will allow the audience to witness behind the scenes politics and draw strong parallels between today’s political situation and the story of Julius Caesar.

This is Proud Haddock’s first production and they aim to build a reputation as a company that truly celebrates the work of seminal playwrights from Great Britain. Planned future work will include the staging of plays from Alan Bennett to Jez Butterworth. The company will aim to share these great stories with different cultures and communities in the UK and across the world.
