Crushing Blows Release Double A-Side Single on new Studio Label, Snug Recording Co

Out October 7th 2013

Unknown Animal | Dream On / Dream Off

London Show: 5th October Urban Bar, Whitechapel

Crushing Blows, Rainbows, music, music profile, music news.

Crushing Blows are a two-piece, noise pop band from Derbyshire who have previously drawn comparisons to Battles, Broken Social Scene and Arcade Fire.  The release of this new Double A-side single sees the electronic and experimental side of the band come to the forefront with drum machines and field recordings sitting alongside the bands dynamic and unusual pop songs.

The band’s two previous EP’s have received airplay from Huw Stephens, Steve Lamacq, Tom Robinson, Jen Long and Shell Zenner as well as last year’s double A-Side single Hiding Place / You Will Always be Lonely being awarded single of the year by Music Liberation. The single ‘The People You Will Never Meet’ was made single of the week by Simon Raymonde at Amazing Radio.

After spending their formative years gigging extensively with appearances at T in the Park, Y Not Festival, Liverpool Sound City, SWN Festival and supporting Public Service Broadcasting, Cerebal Ballzy, Bo Ningen & METZ to name but a few, Crushing Blows are set to continue work on their debut LP into 2014 with a tour to coincide with the release.

Snug Recording Co is the new label run from the Derby based recording studio of the same name.  The aim of the label is to break away from traditional industry models by working with artists on a cooperative, collaborative basis to produce small releases without the pressures of money, market ability or contracts, with all releases agreed upon a handshake only.

This, the first release on the label, exemplifies their core values with two unsettled, dark, yet intriguing pieces of dreamy, electric pop music.

Unknown Animal | Dream On / Dream off will be available from crushingblows.bandcamp.com and all major digital download stores on October 7th and will also feature on Crushing Blows’ debut LP, due for release in early 2014.

Crushing Blows are Chris Jones and Andrew Foster.

The Unsung Beauty Hero

Cuticura-Anti-Bacterial-Hand-Serum-181563

How many times a day do you think you touch your face? Research shows that we touch common objects 3.3 times per hour and our face 3.6 times. The germs transfer to the face and may lead to skin irritations, bacterial and viral infections. Step in Cuticura and its range of antibacterial skin care solutions.

I always carry their Cuticura Anti Bacterial Hand Serum in my bag. Especially as a women’s handbag is supposed to have as much bacteria as the average toilet. Ew. It protects hands from germs for up to 8 hours. It kills 99.99% of germs and only costs £3.49 for 200ml. Unlike other antibacterial hand gels, it also keeps hands soft and smells nice.

I also love their Cuticura Hand Hygiene Anti-Bacterial Wipes Which I use to clean my makeup bag, brushes and my handbag. I also use their Anti Bacterial Hand wash. It is good for my dry skin and also protects for up to 3 hours. They cost £2.49 from Sainsbury’s, Superdrug and independent pharmacies.

Niki’s Organic Balm’s are a blend of organic oils, essential oils and beeswax. Niki trained as a homeopath and a reflexologist. She was surprised how many balms were petroleum or mineral based oil. She bought beeswax, oils, essential oils and started making her own foot balms. Her balms are antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial. They smell fantastic and she now has a few different varieties. Her original balm is good for everything from cold sores, insect bites and cracked heels. I talked to Niki’s son about her balms and the family passion really came through. Great balms that work. http://www.nikisbalms.co.uk

Keeping hydrated is very important for good skin and health. Volvic Touch of Fruit’s newest edition, Tropical Fruits Flavour tastes great. Actors Who Make Their Own Work

actors who make their own work, lake bell, tina fey, kristen wiig, greta gerwig, lake bell, brit marling, vin diesel. The rumour that acting is the hardest and most brutal industry in the world is unfortunately true, I have been an actor now for over 10 years. Yikes. Along the way I have realised that the only way to have a brilliant career is to write and produce your own stuff. Which is what I did with Prose & Cons. It is currently being edited.

If you want to be inspired, here is our list of the Top Actors Who Make Their Own Work.

Brit Marling

This American producer, director, writer and actress caused a stir with Another Earth. She was only 27 at the time. Now 30 and with 13 films under her belt. She was even on the front cover of Vanity Fair’s prestigious Hollywood edition. She has written four films and directed one.

Check out these personal quotes from her IMDB page:

“I always started writing in order to act. I don’t know that I could have the discipline to sit down and write if I was going to give it away. That would be too hard. But I love to act in stories that are outside my imagination because I can only conceive of so many things from my point of view. The thing that’s intoxicating about being an actor is that you get to live in someone else’s world for a while and I hope to do more of that. But I think I’ll never stop writing now because I’m wondering why there aren’t more representatives of women that are like the women we know. Where’s the film with the women who are complicated and strong and beautiful and sexy and interesting and of all body types? You don’t get to see enough of them. So there’s something important in attempting to write them for myself and for the insanely talented women out there.”

“[on why she decided to become a screenwriter in relation to her being an actress] How terrifying to surrender your life to being chosen all the time. Having to be chosen and re-chosen. Writing so that I can act became a way of having not more control over my future but not having to wait for permission. You can choose yourself. Hmm, who should play this part? I nominate me!”

Mindy Kaling

Started out as a writer for The Office and even wrote a character for herself into the show. At the age of 34 Kaling has created her own show, The Mindy Project, and was named as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2013.

Mindy knows she is different and makes fun of it: “I’m a minority chubby woman who has my own show on a network. I don’t know how long this is going to last!” She told Jon Stewart. She has 2.3million Twitter followers and refuses to diet.

Kaling wrote in her bestselling memoir Is Everybody Hanging Out Without Me?: “I fall into that nebulous, quote-unquote, normal American woman size that legions of fashion stylists detest. For the record, I’m a size 8 — this week, anyway. Many stylists hate that size because I think to them, it shows that I lack the discipline to be an ascetic; or the confident, sassy abandon to be a total fatty hedonist.”

Emma Thompson

She wanted better roles so she wrote the screenplay for Sense and Sensibility, an adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel. The film got Thompson the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and a nomination for leading actress. She hasn’t looked back since. The 54-year-old has 60 films as an actor under her belt and another 12 as a writer.

Nia Vardalos

She kept losing out on roles so she wrote My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The film was a roaring success. Vardalos says: ‘I run into other actresses and we talk about the lack of parts for woman. At least I can write myself a part, which is an amazing skill to possess.”

Barbra Streisand

Streisand was the first woman to win a Golden Globe for directing after co-writing, directing and starring in Yentl. She was 41 and had already broken down a lot of barriers for woman. She started off as a nightclub singer and is now one of the most famous actress, singer, producer, director, actor and writers. Has never been afraid to send herself up. She has inspired generations of woman.

In her own words: “I arrived in Hollywood without having my nose fixed, my teeth capped, or my name changed. That is very gratifying to me.”

“To have ego means to believe in your own strength. And to also be open to other people’s views. It is to be open, not closed. So, yes, my ego is big, but it’s also very small in some areas. My ego is responsible for my doing what I do – bad or good.”

Lake Bell

The 34-year-old is making waves with her film, In A World. She has 35 credits to her name but made her own film this year. After being an actor for 11 years she sat down to write a script and won the prestigious Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival. She told Glamour Magazine: “When I first started auditioning in LA, I realised it was a clique; this guy’s got the monopoly on epics, this woman’s got the monopoly on tampon adverts. It was the perfect environment for a modern comedy.” “I wanted to make a movie’, she went on, “so I wrote a part for myself.”

“Being willing to outsource all of your creative decisions, especially to a first-timer like me, is very ballsy. I had no other choice than to make it the way I made it. And I felt very supported in that. When you write and direct your own film you basically know exactly what you want. Or you hope to. For the studio, it actually can make life a little easier, because if you have a bunch of questions they only need to call one person.”

Kristen Wiig

While Kristen had been in many films and was a regular on Saturday Night Live, she never really broke out until Bridesmaids. Kristen co-wrote and starred in Bridesmaids which was one of the biggest hits of 2011, taking $300 million at the box office and was credited for turning the tide for women in film. She has an amazing 60 credits to her name and we get the feeling the that she is just getting started.

In her own words: “If you’re creating anything at all, it’s really dangerous to care about what people think”. She also states that woman are asked their age more than men.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon

They wrote Good Will Hunting and won an Oscar. They rest is movie star history.

Vin Diesel.

He couldn’t get the roles he wanted so he wrote a short film called Multi-Facials about being bi-racial. Steven Spielberg saw it and cast him in Saving Private Ryan. He is now a movie star and has a few franchises under his belt.

Lena Dunham

She made her first film in her parents New York apartment with a Canon 7D. Tiny Furniture was critically acclaimed and lead to the huge hit and cultural game-shifter, Girls. Still only 27-years-old but was 23 when she wrote, directed and starred in Tiny Furniture.

In her own words: “I was constantly preparing for auditions in a way that was crazy… and then I’d literally get cast as, like, a bouncing ball or a fat man or a security guard.”

Tina Fey

Made her name in Saturday Night Live and also is the creator, producer, star and writer of 30 Rock. She wrote a book called Bossy Pants and had two children. She returned to work not long after giving birth saying, “NBC has me under contract; the baby and I only have a verbal agreement’. Is their no end to her talents?

Greta Gerwig

Became known thanks to her association with the mumblecore film movement. The 30-year-old is the indie IT queen of the moment. Was brilliant in Lola Versus and stars in film-of-the-moment, Frances Ha, which she co-wrote with director boyfriend Noah Baumbach. Plays strong female characters.

Time To Give Up Sugar? Mentor Me Off Sugar Day 28: It’s Over!

Well, I have finished. At midnight on Sunday I was no longer on a low/no sugar diet. Did I binge? No and I am as proud of that as I am of doing the programme. I cannot believe I got all the way to the end.

Yesterday I had some tea with sugar. One with two and the other two cups of tea with half a teaspoon of sugar. I also had a few pieces of dark chocolate. I had toast for breakfast, a cheese sandwich for lunch and a chicken roast for supper. No cake and no fizzy juice. Even the tea and the chocolate tasted sweeter than ever before. The thing I have to watch out for is eating a lot of vegetables.

I had my final call with Laura on Sunday evening and she is proud of me. In fact everyone I know is both proud and shocked. Going forward, Laura has given me a goal setting worksheet and I don’t want to ever fall into my previous sugary ways. Although I need to add a correction pointed out by Laura. I was told a homemade Gin & Tonic doesn’t have any sugar. It does! My own fault and the tonic water I bought would have had a lot of sweeteners instead, which I hate and think cause cancer and other nasty diseases.

Even too much fruit is bad for you. Laura sent me this  interesting article by Dr Mercola on fruit.

My energy level has really improved since I cut out sugar and I am completely converted. Give it a shot. I will be adding lots of low/no sugar recipes to Frost.

Meanwhile, have a look at Laura’s meal suggestions for a day.

Meal Ideas

Breakfast |  Keep it simple with two boiled eggs, a kiwi and a few nuts. Add a slice of toast if you want.

Lunch |Try a green lentil, beetroot and feta cheese salad with olive oil.

Snack | Chicken shavings and sliced avocado on a rice cake

Dinner |A slow cooked warming beef stew with swede or squash mash. Homemade popcorn to celebrate!

celebratory, defiant and unapologetic as ever. With the hilarious energy of the stalwarts thriving in

The final series goes out with a bang when Jamie Maguire (Aaron McCusker) discovers he isn’t a

The comings and goings on the Chatsworth Estate, and the exploits of feckless Frank Gallagher, his

Honky Tonk Chelsea Restaurant Review

The Honky Tonk Chelsea makes an impression immediately. Outside the decor is black and classy, inside the first thing you see is a bar which serves the most amazing cocktails I have had in a long time, then you go into the restaurant at the back; balloon shaped light bulbs, banquets, pictures of Johnny Cash and the American flag all add to an amazing atmosphere.  The menu is stuck to the table, which I love. I always want to keep my menu to double-check what I am eating and look at what else I might want.

The staff are amazing and friendly. There is a great family atmosphere despite the fact no one is related. Their passion and talent is easy to spot. As for the food? Here goes….

Chicken Quesadila; tortilla stuffed with home smoked chicken, applewood, peppers, cheese, peppers and onions. Served with fresh guacamole.

chicken quesadilla, tortila

I love this starter. The guacamole was the best guacamole I have ever tasted. It was very fresh and tastes like it had just been made. The red onion really shone adding to both the texture and the flavor. The Quesadila itself was great; hot with melting applewood cheese which was smoky and nutty, along with the chicken. A very good starter and a simple dish done incredibly well.

crabcakes

New England Crab Cakes: sourced from Cornwall with a sweet chilli mayo dressing

The cakes were very tasty with a crunchy texture and flavorful crab and herb filling. The sweet chilli mayo was delicious. The rocket which made up the rest of the dish was a bit boring.

Honky Tonk Burger

burger, honky tonk, where to eat, restaurant review, where to eat, London, chelsea

7oz of rare breed Longhorn beef. Topped with cheese, bacon, caramelized onion, guacamole, salsa, baby gem lettuce and tomatoe with their burger sauce. Comes with a seeded burger bun and rosemary fries. It also came with a gherkin on top.

My first reaction of this burger was ‘wow’. When they say ‘fully loaded’, they really mean it. It was so big I had to eat it with a knife and fork. It comes with a side of amazing rosemary chips. The portion is huge so it really fills you up. Very good value and tastes great. The burger has different sauces and guacamole. Burger fans will love this signature dish, and for those who sit on the fence, get off now and try this; it tastes great.

chicken burgerChicken Burger

The chicken burger was also visually impressive. It came with a lovely large slice of beef tomato as well as aubergines, peppers and more of that excellent gucamole. The burger bun was nice and crunchy. The rosemary french fries were a strong accompaniment. The portion was generous and won’t leave you hungry. All in all an excellent burger.

Cocktails

Dark & Stormy; lime, ginger beer and rum.

cocktail, cocktails, where to go,

This is an amazing, classic cocktail. The Honky Tonk has a bar and I would happily sit there all day and just try every cocktail on the menu. All of their cocktails have an extra special something and add to the atmosphere of the restaurant. It is a brilliant  American experience.

The Wibble; gin, sloe gin, grapefruit and lemon juice with blackberry liquor

I love sloe gin and this lived up to the expectations. The glasses are long so you get a lot of cocktail for your buck. This was sweet but not sickly. Delicious and moreish.

cocktail, cocktails, fun, London

Honey Bourbon S’Mores

S'mores, Bourbon S'Mores, Honky Tonk, Chelsea, Restaurant review, London, where to eat

I had heard of S’Mores but this was my first time trying them. Basically they are bourbon biscuits, dipped in chocolate with marshmallow inside. Which might be one of the best food inventions EVER. I loved them and the criss cross sauce it came with on the plate. I want to eat these every day now. Oh, okay, every second day.

New York Cheesecake

cheesecake

Our other pud was a classic generous slice of thick New York cheesecake.

Bourbon shot followed with pickle juice.

We were given these two shots and did not know what they were. Well, now I know; they are AMAZING. Bourbon chased down with pickle juice. It tastes great and this kind of quirky twist is what the Honky Tonk is all about. Great atmosphere and attention to detail, thrown in with great classic food with personality. Do try this at home.

Pickle Juice Shots!

Tequila shot.

Need I say more? Happiness is me.

Honky Tonk is an amazing restaurant. It has great decor and atmosphere. The staff are brilliant and the cocktails and food are both brilliant. Head down for a good time and a great American experience.

MonaLisa Twins | Music Profile

MonaLisa Twins have made an amazing collaborative time-lapse music video

The band said, “We were thinking about a creative way to get lots of people involved in a connecting, artistic project, all in the spirit of the song title “When We’re Together”. We were curious about how many people would pause their activities out of their love for adventure to be part of a spontaneous happening. We installed a canvas on the walls of Stables Market in Camden, London’s world-famous art district. We ourselves started with a big red heart in the center. Pedestrians joined in and added their ideas and colors to the painting.
girls with guitars, MonaLisa Twins, music, music profile,
We were overwhelmed by the dedication of stangers, joining in to
create a collective, beautiful artpiece together. Businessmen, cyclists, musicians, children and elderly people alike were painting side by side, laughing and sharing their thoughts and even very personal stories. This day was just more evidence for us how much the arts are able to lift spirits and make people happy. It was only later that we realized that the project also fitted quite well with our (band) name MonaLisa. Artistic all the way ;)”
The painting from the video is up for auction here.

Check out their other recent video with a distinctly different, more sombre feel for “The Wide, Wide Land”, a song written as a musical farewell for their Grandmother, who suffered with Alzheimer’s for many years.

Band: MonaLisa Twins
Location: Austria, UK
CD: “When We’re Together”
Styles: 60s Pop, 60ies Rock ‘n’ Roll, Beat music, British Invasion – with
elements of Folk, Latin, Psychedelic
Similar to: Jake Bugg, The Belle Brigade, She & Him, The Last Shadow Puppets, Never Shout Never
Influences: 60ies Backbeat music, The (Early) Beatles, The Easy Beats,
Donovan, The Monkeys, Bob Dylan, Simon&Garfunkel, Pink Floyd
Members/Instruments:
Mona Wagner – Vocals, Guitars, Blues Harp
Lisa Wagner – Vocals, Guitars, Ukulele
The Beat is back! The MonaLisa Twins are one of the very few modern bands
who write original songs in the 60’s Beat music tradition, reviving the
genre with a modern, fresh twist without sounding pop-ish or trivial. On
their debut album “When We’re Together” they present the finest Rock ‘n’
Roll and Beat music, skillfully venturing out in Psychedelic, Folk and even
Latin genres, inspired by the likes of The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Simon &
Garfunkel. Their signature features are polyphonic harmonies and a wiry,
bright guitar sound. The even mix of fun and depth in their music and lyrics brings back the spirit of this time and therefore speaks to a wide range of international audiences.
While listening to and playing all different kinds of music genres in their
youth the girls stayed with the 60’s songwriting style, something they think is way too much neglected these days: “We aim to write songs which we ourselves would like to listen to and we always loved the spiritual,
humorous and true-to-life mindset of the 60’s. However we aren’t nostalgic
about it or trying to be “retro”. We simply believe that something great had been started in this era that is worthy of being continued.”
The core of the band are two 19 year old girls, actual twins named Mona and
Lisa. Originally from Austria, they toured extensively, performing in the USA, Australia and UK in their teens. They started out with cover songs on YouTube and released two CDs with covers in 2007 and 2008. At 16 they
decided to go for a professional music career and began to record their debut album “When We’re Together” which was released in 2012. Since then they’ve played many live shows in small to medium-sized venues and festivals in Continental Europe, playing to new audiences and raising interest for their own music. Besides being played on Austrian radio stations they are increasingly conquering the Anglo-American music markets with regular airplay and doing radio and TV interviews in the USA and UK as well. They also produced a decent number of high quality music videos which have garnered a total of nearly 2 million views and over 4,500 subscribers on YouTube so far.
Moving forward, for the rest of 2013 Mona and Lisa are dedicated to work on releasing more music videos and writing new songs.
