21st Raindance Film Festival Opening Gala & How To Make Money Selling Drugs Premiere

The 21st Raindance Film Festival started with a richter scale bang. The great and the good of the International Film Industry congregated at the Vue West End in the iconic film centre of Leicester Square.

Elliott Grove, Raindance founder and champion of independent cinema, was in his element and shiny with success. Elliot looked incredibly happy and rightly so; his achievement is vast.

After the red carpet we were greeted with champagne and mingled.

We then headed into the cinema, grabbed our goody bags filled with popcorn and Pop Chips and waited to watch Michael Cooke’s documentary How to Make Money Selling Drug.

The controversial titled documentary, supported by  addiction services is a brilliant satire on how to sell drugs, but don’t worry, it is an anti-drug film. With an excellent format of going from street dealer to kingpin, it highlights the injustice of law enforcement and social economics. I cannot rave about this documentary enough. It completely changed my thinking and is now my favourite documentary. This is a very important documentary and everyone should see it. It starts off in a light-hearted way but it carries a very serious message. It does not shy away from difficult issues. Definitely go and see it.

The Opening Night After Party Gala at Café de Paris from 9pm with a performance from the wonderfully unique and talented band, Pepe Deluxé. was also great. Raindance is now part of the London fabric, a film festival deeply in the very fabric of the British Film Industry itself. Don’t miss it.

Should You Get A Tattoo?

Tattoos used to be for sailors, then rebels and cool people and now they’re…everywhere. Which begs the question, are they still cool? Every celebrity these days seems to ink themselves regularly, no matter what their brand might be. David Beckham reminds me of that line in Cape Fear, ‘I don’t know whether to look at him or read him’.

Magazines make getting a tattoo seem as natural as getting a hair cut and it would be easier to count the people I know that don’t have a tattoo than those who do. The fact is, it is beginning to annoy me because getting a tattoo is not like getting a haircut: it is permanent, expensive, painful and carries health risks. I can say this because I, like pretty much everyone else in the world, have one. Albeit one from ten years ago when I was a teenager; the Japanese Tao for courage on my hip bone. It is tiny and can be covered by my thumb. Which is what the criteria for having a tattoo should be in my opinion: making it able to be hidden. If you don’t agree then think of some of my poor acting friends, who have lost work due to their body art, and singers with hand tattoos who can’t get hired. If the entertainment industry is not keen on people with tattoos imagine how the ‘real’ working world is like. CEO’s with lots of tattoos are not exactly common.

Megan Fox had her tattoo of Marilyn Monroe removed because it had 'negative energy'.

In fact, not everyone can pull of tattoos. Angelina Jolie can but she is so beautiful not much could dent her beauty. It was actually Angelina who inspired me to get a tattoo in the first place. And Jolie is not immune from mistakes, she had her ‘Billy Bob’ tattoo removed after she divorced the actor.  Before Jolie actresses were much more boring, after she came along it became okay to ink yourself up and actually have an opinion. Bland went out, personality came in. But that was a brief window, and you have to be a pretty big star to be work the make up artists budget for hiding it all.

So should you get a tattoo? Let’s break it down.

Think first about the safety concerns. There are serious medical implications in getting a tattoo. Click on this link for more of the safety concerns which include: Tattooing and piercing break the skin and may cause bleeding. They cause open wounds and infection is possible. Infections at the site may cause permanent deformity, scarring, severe illness and even death. Skin infected with resistant organisms such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) can be life-threatening.

Tattoos are also painful. Very much so. I have a very high pain threshold and I still thought it was painful.

Secondly, what do you do for a living? As much as we should not judge people by how they look, we do. It might hold back your career and even affect how other people treat you.

Thirdly, are you just doing it to be rebellious? Because tattoos are not rebellious anymore. Everyone has them; even Felicity Kendall and my aunt. That is when you know the game is over.

Fourthly, do you really want it for life? Have a very serious think about that. Removal is expensive, as you can see from the information below. Make absolute sure it is what you want, and NEVER get someones name tattooed on you. You will regret it.

THINKING OF HAVING A CHERYL COLE ROSE BUM TATTOO? LIVE TO REGRET IT AND REMOVAL WILL COST YOU £12,000

·      Rapper Lil Wayne would have to spend £105k and 173 hours to get rid of all his tattoos

·      David Beckham would have to spend £38k and 71 hours to be ink-free

·      One Direction’s Harry Styles would need to fork out £11k to remove his tattoos

·      68% increase in Brits enquiring about tattoo removal in the past year

If you’re thinking of copying Cheryl Cole and having a rose bum tattoo, bear in mind that it could cost £12,000 and 20 hours of laser sessions to have Cole’s latest inking removed, according to new research carried out by private healthcare search engine WhatClinic.com.

They have analysed the body art of 10 of the most tattooed celebrities and worked out how much it would cost to have it all removed. The research shows that, should they ever regret their decision to go under the needle, these celebs could end up paying tens of thousands of pounds to be tattoo free.

Top of the league table of inked-up celebrities is U.S. rapper Lil Wayne, who would need more than 500 sessions totaling 173 hours with a tattoo-removal specialist to erase all his artwork – at a mind-boggling cost of almost £105,000. That’s enough to buy a top-of-the-range Porsche or double the average deposit on a property put down by a first-time buyer in the UK last year.

David Beckham’s body is not just a temple, it is also adorned with tattoos from top to bottom, meaning a staggering bill of almost £40,000 – and the equivalent of 48 football matches in time under the needle – to be tattoo free again. And One Direction star Harry Styles may be just 19-years-old, but he’s already an avid lover of body artwork. And the cost to have them removed? Almost £11,000.

While the colossal cost may not be eye-watering for celebrities, for the millions of Brits who have and love tattoos, wiping the slate clean is likely to put a strain on their finances and in many cases may be unaffordable.

There has been a 68% increase in the number of people enquiring about tattoo removal in the past 12 months alone, with the cost of removing a small, black and white tattoo starting at £400. That fits with market research showing that significant numbers of people end up regretting their tattoos – a recent poll by Harris Research showed that almost a fifth (19%) of Britons with tattoos regretted having them done.

The following table, based on average costs provided by three tattoo-removal specialists, estimates how many laser sessions and total cost for some of the most famous tattooed celebrities to have all their tattoos removed:

Wayne Tatzapa, founder of tattoo removal specialist, Discardead, comments: “Despite tattoo removal being an exact science there are many variables that can determine the number of sessions required to remove all trace of the tattoo.

“The time needed to remove a tattoo varies according to the individual, as do the chances of wiping out any trace of it. Skin type, the tattoo’s location and colour, scarring and the degree of density all make a difference.

“Many people don’t realise that removing tattoos can take months or even years, because laser sessions should be at least six weeks to three months apart to get the best results and minimise the risk of scarring and other side effects.”

Do you have a tattoo? Do you regret it?

KTZ SS14 London Fashion Week 2013

British designers KTZ had a definite Middle Eastern vibe going down the catwalk. Some of it was great, others- like their burka inspired outfits- were more controversial. Guest on the front and second row also got some Argan oil. The middle east trend spreading in the UK has definitely reached our wardrobes.

Sorry for the quality of the photos, a video will be up soon. Unfortunately I managed to cut my hand just as we were ushered to our seats!

Handpicked Media London Fashion Week Suite SS14 | Fashion

The Handpicked Media London Fashion Week suite was as amazing as ever. As well as lots of lovely people I also got pampered and checked out some great brands.

I had my brows done by HD Brows, they looked so good afterwards I didn’t want to wash my face. Ever. I tried on some jackets from Superdry. Their tailoring is amazing and their jackets are such good quality. Superdry also have great Bento Beauty boxes. They have some great products in them and look cool.

I also had my make up done by Martin Carter. The Stila make up artist used some amazing Stila products on me, including the CC Cream which comes out blue, but looks great on. I love Stila and Martin taught me some amazing make up tricks such as; put eyeliner in between the upper lash line for a natural, defined look and to paint mascara on the bottom lashes with a brush rather than applying the mascara directly. I wish I looked how Martin made me look 24/7.

I also had a hot stone massage and a hand massage from The Mandara Spa. I am completely converted to hot stone massage now. My spine and hands were never so happy. I felt completely relaxed and happy. I highly recommend them.

I also had a bra fitting thanks to Freya lingerie. Like most women I found out I was wearing the wrong size. Apparently women think their back is larger than it is, this turned out to be true for me as I thought I was a 34D but am actually a 30DD. I love my Freya Lingerie, below.

I had a relaxing manicure. I always love getting manicures. When my nails look good and are painted just looking at them makes me happy, even if I am having a bad day. WAH nails gave me some great blue polka dot nails. I love them.

Legendary hair dresser Errol Douglas was also doing hair. My fellow bloggers/writers were walking out with amazing hair styles. Unfortunately I had to head off to a show so couldn’t get one myself.

I managed to pick up some products in the suite at One Aldwych Hotel and will be reviewing them in the coming months.

Well done Handpicked Media, see you in six months.

Do you want to try any of the above? Which one?

The Bar Chocolat experience celebrates the beauty of food and culinary delights. It sees creatives including Bompas & Parr, Tabitha Denholm, Amelia Rope, Petra Storrs and Lou Hayter coming together to create a part immersive, part exhibition journey into the multi-sensory experience of chocolate.

We had an amazing three course meal and the exhibition was amazing too. Opening the door to smell chocolate. Tabitha’s film, the chocolate dessert, the food and experience. The starter was served on a platter of ice and the main was served directly onto the table. Dessert involved putting real 24 carat gold onto our lips. . Amazing, just amazing. We had a brilliant time.

“At the moment we are only planning to do womenswear, but who knows what the future holds. the main thing with Funky Offish is that it is not just a label, it is a way of life and I can’t keep it in anymore.”

How To Pass Your Driving Test. Frost’s Editor Learns How To Drive

how to pass your driving test, pass your driving test, pass first time, nerves, tips, advice, how to pass driving test first timeIt is embarrassing how long it took me to get my driving licence. Not because I kept failing my test, but because it took me ten (yes, really!) years to take it. To some degree this wasn’t my fault. I got my provisional licence when I was 17. I immediately started taking lessons in Scotland where I lived. I was confident in my driving but kept hearing the same thing, ‘You need more lessons.’ I was desperate to do my test and dumped my driving instructor. I got another one who was worse. He would break wind in the car. If you think junctions are hard then try to do them while holding your breathe!

Instructor number three was a woman. She seemed to drift away while I was driving and, like number one, would keep saying I needed more lessons. I asked what was wrong with my driving and also like number one, she could not answer. I was annoyed.

In the meantime I passed my theory test, first time, with the highest score the test centre said they had ever had. I finally made my driving instructor book a test. And then I got an acting job in London. In fact, I kept getting acting jobs and auditions. I would buy blocks of lessons and then get a job. I realised that I had to move. The traveling and costs were too much. I moved to London and then getting my drivers licence became something on my to do list that never actually got done. Until this year.

This kind of procrastination is not like me but after a lot of thought I know why: I hate tests. I am confident in my ability to do things but I don’t like it when people test me. Ten years ago I was raring to go, but the whole test phobia had gotten worse with age. I had to control this to progress. I had built the test up to more than it was. As the years crept by and I headed into my twenties I felt like the oldest non-driver in the world. Everybody else seemed to be able to do this essential life skill, why not me? Then I started to lose jobs. A lead role in a BBC TV show, big commercials and countless films. I had to do something about it.

I started taking lessons again in 2012. In fact I had one lesson in 2010 and one lesson in 2011. In 2012 I started looking for an instructor. The guy from the AA Driving School had been giving lessons since 7am. I had my lesson with him at 7pm. I was driving in the dark after a long break. I had to have my wits about me, I lived in Ealing at the time and Southall was my nearest driving test centre. Southall is notoriously hard to pass your test at. Their pass rate is around 40%. I had a friend who had taken three goes there to pass her test. There were horror stories. Driving in Southall during that lesson, with a driving instructor who was pretty much asleep, was a learning curve. I decided not to have any more lessons with him. He was obviously overworked.

Next up was BSM. They offered an instructor who had not taken all of her tests yet for only £20 an hour. Bargain! I thought. As I said, I was confident in my driving ability, I just needed practice and the nerve to take the test. I paid for a block of ten lessons at £200. This turned out to be a big mistake. She arrived and I got in the car and I felt a presence behind me. I turned around and there was a woman staring at me. ‘Oh, this is my cleaner. You don’t mind if she comes along, do you?’ Shocked and thrown I mumbled ‘no’. I immediately was annoyed to myself. I have always been too polite. Something I am still working on. The cleaner did not seem to like my driving, Tutting every time I did something wrong. Which was often as the instructor and the cleaner talked to each other in a different language the entire time. On other lessons, she spent the entire time on her phone. One entire lesson was bay parking, something that the Southall driving test does not include.

I took lessons with Red, the instructor kept trying to sell me other things and we didn’t gel. I then took lessons with an independent driving instructor. I won’t mention her name here but I regret every lesson I ever took with her. She would yell and get angry, tell me about pupils who had blown their top and gotten angry with her. She would then dump them, not realising it was her that was pushing them too far. Passing a church she mentioned that they should send their prayers our way. I was beyond offended. My driving got worse under her and she kept putting me off taking my test. One day at a roundabout in Southall I couldn’t take anymore. I turned the ignition off as angry cars overtook. She yelled at me. I yelled back. We never had another lesson and she sent me a long, bitchy email about my ‘f**k it’ attitude. Self awareness obviously being too hard to grasp. She also said I would never pass my test.

By this time I had had enough but I would not quit. As I edged into my late twenties I started to worry about being 30 and without a drivers licence. I would not have it. I got on the internet and madly researched. I would take an intensive course. And I would pass.

The theory test only lasts two years and I had already taken it twice, passing first time with high scores each time, it was about to run out again due to my procrastination. I booked an intensive course. It was the best thing I ever did. I actually did not pass first time. the nerves got to me. I was physically shaking from head to toe. I only got three minors but was so nervous that when the examiner said ‘turn right’ I immediately did so, onto a two way side street.

I decided to not let the nerves, or the pressure, both financial and social, get to me. I bought some Bach Rescue Remedy, ate a banana, bought The Girls’ Guide to Losing Your L-plates: How to Pass Your Driving Test and focused. I used positive visualisation to imagine myself driving, on my own, down a country road. ‘You’re a good driver Catherine,’ My instructor said. ‘It is just a test, why be nervous?’ I put it into prescriptive. I told myself that the only person I had to pass for was myself. And I did it. With only four minors.

To this day my driving licence is one of my favourite things. Every time I look at it I know that anything is possible with hard work, perseverance and a positive attitude. The fact it was so hard to get just makes it even more amazing. I spent thousands of pounds but I finally feel like a grown up.

How To Pass Your Driving Test (From someone who has done it)

Take an intensive course. They are easier and you won’t get an instructor stringing you along for more money.

Choose an instructor that you get along with. Don’t give money to anyone who shouts or bullies.

Study. Read the The Official DSA Theory Test Book and highway code again. Remember the rules of the road.

If you get nervous try Bach Rescue Remedy. It worked for me.

Ask friends and family for their stories and advice.

Don’t tell anyone when you actually do your test. You don’t need the extra pressure.

Try and get a family member or friend to take you out. I did not have this and it cost me quite a bit of money as I could only practice in an instructors car.

Your theory test runs out after two years. Take it just before you take the practical, It will help having the knowledge in your head too.

For Girls, The Girls’ Guide to Losing Your L-plates: How to Pass Your Driving Test is an excellent book. It really helped me pass and also has some driving tips for when you do pass.

For Boys; Pass Your Practical Driving Test: Discover what your examiner is looking for and save the expense and heartache of failing is a good book.

Relax, if you fail you can do it again. It is not the end of the world.

Don’t over think it. Just be aware. Indicate even if other cars don’t. Just because someone has a licence doesn’t mean they are a good driver.

Always remember your checks. Look all around during maneuvers and at junctions.

Know what the DSA are looking for and know why people fail.

Good luck!
