How to Stop Being a Couch Potato and Start Enjoying Life

Lululemon_Yellow_Yoga

It’s no joke: a sedentary lifestyle can contribute to numerous preventable causes of death. A person who is seated for over five hours a day is put considerably more at risk of contracting cardiovascular disease than one who exercises for even just four hours per week. Furthermore, lack of exercise can cause depression or anxiety. If you want to start enjoying life you have to stand up and say no to being a couch potato.

Here are some useful ideas to help you get up off the couch and back in the game:

  • Avoid eating on the settee. The more you get used to doing this the more time you will be able to spend on the couch. Try to make a habit of setting aside time for meals away from the TV.
  • Rest and relaxation are integral ingredients of a healthy and happy life, but too much idle behavior will do you no good in the end. When you go to sit down in front of the TV, set yourself a limit on the time spent in front of it.
  • Get rid of your unwanted DVDs and video games. You’ve seen or played them all before and it’s time for something new. You can sell them easily on http://www.musicmagpie.com/ and use the money for a gym membership or a bicycle.
  • Why not watch TV while riding an exercise bike and THEN see how many episodes of Prison Break you can watch in a row!
  • Studies have shown that prolonged periods of little or no movement inhibit the effectiveness of one of the key enzymes which break down blood fat. If your occupation requires you to spend lots of time sitting down, make sure to periodically stand up and stretch your legs.
  • Apply the principle of active transport to your daily life. We spend too much time in a sitting position, even while travelling. Walk or ride a bike, leave early and take the scenic route to work and you’ll feel the benefits of a greater sense of wellbeing.
  • Get a hobby. Count up the hours you spend on the sofa in a year and think what you could do with that time. If you cut out just an hour of TV time every day just imagine what you could achieve in a year. Whether it’s Ping-Pong or marathon running, find something to suit you and stick at it.
  • Join a sports team. It could be at your local soccer club or it could be as simple as forming a bowling team with good friends. The commitment necessary to be a valued team player will give you the encouragement you need get off the settee regularly.

Everybody needs time to relax and a good long couch session every now and again can be good for your state of mind – but too much is detrimental to your health. Don’t think of it as a loss of relaxation time, but rather as time gained socialising, improving your health and extending your lifespan

Their songs hinge on the chemistry between Aluna’s cool, commanding, distinctly British vocals and George’s disorientating brew of warped samples, twitching beats and thick, woozy bass.

They have had huge success with ‘White Noise’ and ‘Attracting Flies’ AlunaGeorge are on their way to even bigger things. The VEVO Go Show with Lucozade will showcase a sample of their tracks and some lucky person will get a chance to actually meet them.

the set table the art of small gatherings.

Some books are just beautiful and deserve to be endlessly browsed. The Set Table is such a book. It is a beautifully designed and full of endless domestic pleasures.

For those of us who are not domestic (me!) a guide on linen, cutlery and the art of small gatherings is a much needed and much appreciated thing. If you ever wanted to know how to buy or make linen this book tells you how. It also tells you how to get stains out and the different types of linen. Buying second hand crockery and types of crockery are also covered. Along with shapes and sizes. It also goes through different materials and tells you how to clean silver.

Hannah Shuckburgh is features editor of Conde Nast’s Easy Living magazine and you can tell. This is a classy book which will surely turn it’s readers into dinner party gods and goddesses. I loved the illustrations. The one on cutlery shapes will never have you confused about the difference between your bouillon and salt spoon again.

I also love the chapter on food. You can add lots to a meal with bread, water and sauces and this book really lets you know how.

An adorable, educational book. Brilliant illustrations and lots of useful information.

Simple and beautiful ideas for laying the table is the subject of The Set Table. From supper for two on a candlelit urban roof terrace to a picnic lunch for friends on the sitting-room carpet, the look is effortlessly artistic and uncomplicated, celebrating the intimate and unique experience of eating well. With ideas for every aspect of a well-set
table – from napkins to glassware, cutlery to lighting – Hannah Shuckburgh inspires you to make even the smallest of gatherings very special with modest resources.

Liam Hemsworth, Solange Knowles & Chloe Norgaard at Belvedere Party in Cannes

Belvedere Vodka played host to one of Cannes biggest, most exclusive parties. Some of the celeb world’s biggest names came out to play, including a newly single Liam Hemsworth and a newly pink-haired Chloe Norgaard. Hip hop icon Reverend Run from RUN-D.M.C performed to the celebrity-filled crowd at the legendary VIP ROOM nightclub to celebrate the world’s first super-premium vodka’s return to Cannes (France) for the sixth year.

Here is the gossip!

Liam Hemsworth –  This was a total guys night out for Liam with his agent and manger and he seemed to be LOVING the excess female attention – the girls went NUTS when security walked him in – clamouring for photos, even throwing ice at his table to get his attention.

Liam also JUST landed in Cannes at 12:30am that night, so literally, his first stop at the festival was the Belvedere party

Chloe Norgaard – She was pulled through the crowds of people, only to be noticed by her distinctive and newly-dyed pink ‘rainbow hair’.

Solange Knowles – Came with two friends and refused to do any interviews claiming she was ‘super jet-lagged’. She didn’t mind buying her own drinks and came across as extremely down to earth.

Will The Royal Baby Be Elizabeth III?

Will the Royal Baby be Elizabeth III? Duchess and Duke of CambridgeAfter months of royal baby speculation, it appears the nation believes the new royal arrival will be a girl named Elizabeth born on the 7th July.

These predictions came out top in a poll of nearly 4,000 fellow expectant mums who were asked to guess the sex, name and the date the royal baby would arrive on parenting website Bounty.com.

Despite recent rumours of Harry letting it slip that the royal couple are expecting a boy and Kate buying a blue Bugaboo pram, two thirds still believe the new arrival will be a princess.

And when it comes to naming their firstborn, most think the couple will be ‘keeping it in the family’ with Elizabeth the most popular choice, closely followed by Diana, Victoria and Alexandra.

These echo the recent ‘Royal Baby Odds’ released by Ladbrokes, which favour Kate giving birth to a girl at 2-5 with the same names as front-runners at 6-1.

Lisa Penney, spokesmum for Bounty.com, whose ‘Royal Baby Guesser’ competition is asking new mums and pregnant women to cast their predictions for the royal baby. “Everyone loves a royal baby and as speculation reaches fever pitch we thought it would be fun to ask our members for their own predictions,” says Lisa.

“The results show even though Kate and Wills are seen as modern, contemporary royals, people still think they will plump for a traditional royal name.”

When it comes to boys names, George – most widely rumoured to be favoured by the couple for a son – comes out on top, followed by James, Henry and Edward.

Interestingly, it seems new mums are already taking name inspiration from the royals with Bounty Parenting Club’s most recent baby names report revealing both George and James were among the top ten names given to baby boys by new parents in April.

However, the ‘most likely for a princess’ girls names have some catching up to do with Elizabeth the 42nd most popular name given to baby girls in April, Alexandra the 69th, whilst Diana just makes the top 100 at 84th.

And despite recent reports of a ‘family friend’ letting it slip that the baby is due on 13th July, 7th July came out top as the date believed most likely for the baby making its arrival, followed by the 17th and the 14th July.

Lisa continues: “Our records show that year after year parents continue to be influenced by popular culture and celebrity, so it’s highly likely that whatever name the royal couple go for they’ll be setting a baby-naming trend for the future.

“And it does seem that even rumours surrounding the possible name they’ll go for are enough to inspire new parents. Our latest baby data shows sharp increases since the beginning of the year for Diana (up 200%), Elizabeth (up 22%) and George (up 10%), leaping up seven places to become the eighth most popular name for baby boys in the UK.”

There is still time to take part in bounty.com’s ‘royal baby guesser’ competition for your chance to win a ‘Princess for a Day’ experience worth £1,000. Visit http://www.bounty.com/royal-baby/royal-baby-competition to case your own predictions.

The Pre-Baby List: Things To Do Before You Have Children

gorgeousbabyA pre-baby what? A pre-baby list. Not for women who are pregnant and the dad-to-be, but for people who haven’t had children. Kids might be great but you can’t say they don’t cramp your style. My nephew is now two-years-old and has expanded my brothers life, but also allowed him less freedom. So I am not only compiling a list of things to do in your pre-baby years, but I am also writing a book on it, and I would love you to contribute. Just comment below on the things you think everyone should do before they have children. I have a few of my own below to start things off. I will be adding to the list and also keep you updated on the book. Here goes!

1) Go to Paris on the Eurostar.

2) Go to a music festival.

3) Go to London Fashion Week

4) Go scuba diving.

5) Get your driving license and have a roadtrip around America.

6) Have a roadtrip around Europe.

7) Spend weekends sleeping in late and doing absolutely nothing.

8) Read books

9) Buy the Sunday papers and read them (almost) cover to cover.

10) Learn a new skill

What do you think should be added? Comment below.

Deadfall Film Review

Deadfall film review*Spoiler Alert*

One of the best things about Deadfall is Eric Bana. His turn as Addison, a man on the run with his sister (Olivia Wilde) after a botched casino heist is outstanding: chilling and ruthless. He plays psychopath incredibly well. The wintry landscape and the pace of the film makes this a wonderfully entertaining thriller/western/noir.

However his stone-cold killer has a different side. Whilst on the run he sees a man abusing his wife and children, throwing them out into the snow, he helps the family but in the morning gets into a shoot out with the police. The small daughter, who thought he was there to save them, says ‘You’re no angel!’. “No, I’m not.’ he says and makes a run for it.

Addison is clearly loved by his sister Liza, but unlike him she actually has a conscious and morals. They separate as the police are looking for a man and a woman. Olivia Wilde is great as Liza but must have been freezing in her skimpy clothes. All of the characters are multi-layered and crash into each other before coming together in a tension filled finale.

Sissy Spacek is always brilliant, and here she is calm and collected as the woman who has unwelcome thanksgiving guests.

There is also an excellent snowmobile chase and the film starts with a well-shot car crash. An excellent crime drama. Go see.
