Top 99 Most Desirable Women of 2014

Here it is: a list celebrating the most desirable women. AskMen Readers Celebrate Actresses, Performers, Athletes and Other Leading Ladies in Global Poll.

After more than one million votes were cast internationally, Game of Thrones darling Emilia Clarke was voted No. 1 on AskMen’s Top 99 Most Desirable Women of 2014. The 13th edition of the Top 99 poll called on readers to elect women who most closely match their ideals, voting on criteria including sex appeal, character, talent and potential for 2014.

Rounding out this year’s top five are Mad Men’s Alison Brie (No. 2), Blurred Lines music video model Emily Ratajkowski (No. 3), The Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence (No. 4) and Harry Potter’s Emma Watson (No. 5). After an eventful year, Miley Cyrus was featured on the list for the first time ever — at No. 99. “AskMen readers are big television fans — the proof is the 27 current and former TV stars that they voted to this year’s list. Emilia Clarke being crowned Khaleesi of the Top 99 Most Desirable Women of 2014 is attributable to the strength and character she portrays onscreen, as well as the global popularity of Game of Thrones. It’s great to see a Brit top our list this year,” commented Mike Goldstein, Publisher of AskMen.

British women are appealing to men across the globe: 28 British ladies were voted into the Top 99 this year – with Emma Watson (No.5) and Kate Moss (No.10) also making it into the coveted top 10 spots. There were also spots for It-girl of the moment Cara Delevigne (No.13) and the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton (No.35).

The Year of the Musician: Female artists were also incredibly appealing for men around the world, with AskMen readers voting in their droves for Beyonce (No.11), genre-blurring singer Rita Ora (No.18), Harry Styles’ ex-girlfriend and singer-songwriter Taylor Swift (No.30), Brit award-winner Ellie Goulding (No.34), Australian recording artist and model Iggy Azalea (No.95), and Brit singer-songwriter Eliza Doolittle (No.86).

The Reign of the TV Starlet: AskMen’s readers are clearly fans of fantasy series Game of Thrones, electing Clarke’s co-stars Oona Chaplin (No. 43) and Rose Leslie (No. 61) to the 2014 list as well. Additional TV favourites who secured a spot include New Girl’s Zooey Deschanel (No. 17), TV presenter Holly Willoughby (No. 37),  Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara (No. 40) and Fresh Meat’s Zawe Ashton (No.51).

Athletes are hot and coveted this year! AskMen’s readers are seemingly impressed by the drive, dedication and healthy figures of the likes of British Olympians Jessica Ennis (No.59) and Laura Trott (No.93)
and surfers Alana Blanchard (No.36) and Anastasia Ashley (No.67).

Hunger Games: Catching Fire Film Review

I was very excited to see Hunger Games: Catching Fire because I loved the first one so much. However, I was also worried that it would not be as good because it had so much to live up to.

Catching-Fire-catching-fire-movie-33836550-1280-673

One of the highlights of The Hunger Games was, of course, Jennifer Lawrence. An epic heroine, the new Ripley. A survivor with a heart, sacrificing herself for her sister. Straight-talking and brave; Katniss might be one of the best female characters in a film ever. She is certainly one of the most inspirational. A role model even for real women.

Whilst watching Hunger Games: Catching Fire one thing struck me: that there may be people watching it thinking our society is not like this at all, but the Hunger Games does reflect our society, and more countries more than others. The gaps between the haves and the have nots, social injustice, oppression; the Hunger Games is more than thrilling entertainment, it is also a statement on the world we live in. An intelligent action film, well written with brilliant acting and something to say.

It is hard to not get caught up in the story, in the characters and their plight. It is hard to not keep going on about Lawrence as Katniss. The audience love her, the people love her: she is the girl whos purity and bravery sparks a revolution. I have to confess that I have not read the books, but I really want to. Josh Hutcherson (Peeta) and Liam Hemsworth (Gale) are both excellent as the men Katniss is caught between: her real love and her media love. Who will she end up with in the end?

Peeta and Katniss are celebrities but also icons. They empower the people and pay the price. Peeta, Katniss and Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) make an excellent team, bonded together through what can only be described post-traumatic-stress-disorder. Katniss wakes Peeta up by screaming as she wakes up from a nightmare, he comes into her room: ‘It’s okay’, he says, ‘I get them too.’ Even Effie (Elizabeth Banks), that vacuous idiot, can barely take the injustice, finds her conscious and her feelings.

Donald Sutherland is excellent as President Snow and Machiavellian media chief Philip Seymour Hoffman is brilliant and full of depth. I was also pleased with myself as I saw the twist before it happened. The film is relevant, gripping and worthy. In fact the only bad thing I have to say is that it ended far too quickly and I have no idea how I am going to wait an entire year for the next installment.

Five stars.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN…. Monday 3rd September sees the release of the phenomenally successful film, The Hunger Games on 2-disc DVD, 2-disc Blu-Ray, TVOD and digital download formats

To open the celebrations, last night London’s O2 Arena played host to a very exciting event to celebrate the release of Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games this coming Monday. Fans were treated to an exclusive screening of the 15 certificate version of the movie, previously not screened in the UK, hosted by friends of Panem and top UK entertainment site Digital Spy. To let fans get even closer to the action and really fill the shoes of Katniss Everdeen the screening was hosted at Cineworld at the O2’s D-Box theatre so attendees could feel every heart-wrenching moment of the games!

As well as the chance for fans to see the 15 certificate of the hit film, 12 lucky competition winners, our very own Tributes, also had the amazing opportunity to ascend the O2 to take part in a live reaping on top of the Arena itself. Our winning tribute Ryan Crane from Leytonstone, London, received a pair of tickets to the World Premiere of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire for his bravery and courage in scaling the famous London structure! Our plucky winner said: “The event was brilliant, it was really windy when we got to the top and really dramatic. I’m so excited to be going to the world premier, it was so unexpected. I dorkily hugged the guy when I won, it was quite embarrassing!”

To celebrate the release of the phenomenally successful film, The Hunger Games on 2-disc DVD, 2-disc Blu-Ray, TVOD and digital download formats

In tribute to the science fiction blockbuster, twelve HMV stores around the UK and Ireland have been selected to act as special regional ‘districts’ on Sunday, 2nd September – the day before release.

Fans of The Hunger Games who visit one of the 12 participating stores on Sunday 2nd between 2pm and 3pm can check into the applicable HMV store’s Foursquare account. In the Oxford Street store, a ‘Capitol Representative’ will conduct a live Reaping after 3pm. They will select names from two fish bowls, just like in the film. The first name will be taken from a bowl holding the names of the 24 Regional District winners.  The second name will be taken from a bowl holding all the names of attendees at Oxford Street branch. These two lucky Tributes will each win a pair or tickets to UK premiere of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – the next instalment of the series.

The Hunger Games Review

Some have dismissed ‘The Hunger Games’ as another film for the teen masses. But this no ‘Twilight Saga’, nor is it a cheap copy of ‘Battle Royale’ as some have claimed. The film is fantastic and original. Its message is important. It is an absolute must watch for all (although I was a little surprised at the lowly 12A rating).

Set in the future, every year the Capitol randomly selects a boy and girl  from the surrounding twelve districts to fight to the death on live television in a tournament known as ‘The Hunger Games’. The games are a reminder of a rebellion the districts took part in against the Capitol 75 years earlier.

When I first read the summary I was worried the plot would be a little far fetched. I always want films to be believable. I shouldn’t have worried. The film takes itself seriously. At no point does it feel overly fantastical or unrealistic, in fact it does a very good job of feeling real. We should not forget that it is not so long ago in our history that these sorts of events existed, and people did fight each other to the death for others entertainment.

Unlike ‘Battle Royale’ there is a long build up to the actual tournament itself, and it is this which makes the film work so well.

The focus is on the horrific perversity of the whole event. Competitors are taken from the starving poverty of their districts to a world of opulence. As an extra dynamic to the contest the competitors are forced to try and gain sponsors in the lead up to the event by going on chat shows and doing well in test events. Sponsors help during the event will be vital if they want to have any chance of winning. The whole process is brilliantly sickening.

Unlike ‘Battle Royale’ most of the focus is on a single lead character ‘Katniss Everdeen’ who is played superbly by the brilliant Jennifer Lawrence. She is ably supported by a very strong cast.

All in all a superb film. Probably the film of the year and a must see. 9/10
