SISTER SCRIBES: JANE CABLE ON A VERY PERSONAL TRIBUTE

The morning my mother died she asked me to tell her about the next book I would write. I said I had an idea about an archaeologist alone under Lincolnshire’s vast skies and she approved. True, the outline was a little different then, but Rachel and her story still caught her imagination.

It seemed only right, then, to include a character based on my mother in Endless Skies; an intelligent, perceptive octogenarian with a keen interest in people and a huge sense of fun. I called her Esther, the name on my grandmother’s birth certificate that she never used.

Even Esther’s physical attributes were the same as my mum’s. The platinum bob, the pearl handled walking stick and the desperately poor eyesight. But in the early drafts Esther had a very different life story, although I drew great comfort from Rachel’s growing friendship with her.

Without my mother’s faith and encouragement I can honestly say I would never have had a book published. She read my embryonic attempts at novel writing and gave constructive criticism – despite my father being the writer in the family – he never really understood romantic fiction and just seemed slightly puzzled by the whole thing. But Mum egged me on, and when she thought I had a strong enough book suggested I enter The Alan Titchmarsh Show’s People’s Novelist competition. I am absolutely sure it was one of her proudest moments when I reached the final and I just wish she could have travelled to London to see it with her own eyes.

She was also a huge influence on what I write. She devoured library books (large print in her latter years) and used to get very fed up with what she’d call ‘boy meets girl, they fall out three times then get married’ formulaic romances. As a reader she wanted so much more. What neither of us realised was that at the time it would have been far easier for me to find a publisher had I been closer to the mainstream in my chosen genre.

As a result she didn’t live long enough to see my first publishing deal, but I have a feeling she knows. I think she would have been really proud of Another You and would have enjoyed reading it. Endless Skies became a companion piece – my second book with Sapere – both contemporary romances looking back to World War Two.

It was when I made the decision to rewrite Endless Skies this way my mother’s wartime experience came into its own. Or rather one pivotal point she shares with Esther. Both were bright grammar schools girls living in rural communities who could no longer safely travel to school because of the bombing. My mother spent a terrifying air raid trapped on a train in a siding in the middle of Cardiff and her parents said ‘never again’.

While my mother went into the civil service at fourteen (not much older than she was in this picture), Esther’s only local option was a job in the laundry at the RAF base just outside her village. This was home to two squadrons of brave and often reckless Polish airmen, and Esther could only stand by and watch as the most tender and poignant love story unfolded in front of her eyes. A story which, seventy years later, had the power to change Rachel’s life.

A health scare, a baby on the way, or maybe seeing a picture of themselves and thinking they need to lose a few pounds. My first health kick started when I was trying to get pregnant with my firstborn four years ago. A back injury had left me overweight and I had irregular periods. I was about to get married. In total I lose twenty-two pounds. Everybody thought I did it for the wedding pictures but, no, I did it for the blue-eyed boy I have now.

I got pregnant almost immediately. My second health kick happened when, you guessed it!, I started trying for baby number two. I lost less weight this time because I switched up my training, but I become the healthiest I have ever been and my body looked amazing. She took her time but nine months later I was pregnant again. Becoming a parent has made me health conscious. I want to be around to see my children grow up and take care of them. While consistency is still something I am working on, here are five things that helped me lose weight and get super fit.

1: I tracked what I ate.

I recommend everyone tracks what they eat. Even if it is just for a few weeks. The results will be shocking. We all underestimate how many calories we take in. You will also probably be horrified about how much sugar you consume. Healthy eating is hard. I was horrified that I was doing the classic mummy thing of allowing myself chocolate because I deserved it after a hard day. What I really deserved was to respect my body and not to load it up with sugar everyday. One day I had consumed over 100 grams of sugar. The recommended daily allowance is 30 grams!  MyFitnessPal or Lose It! are great apps for your phone to make tracking easy. You can also find out if you are having enough protein, fibre and carbs.

2: I exercised.

There are two kinds of people in this world: those who exercise and those who lie and say they have no time. Don’t be the latter. I love Fitness Blender and PopSugar. Both are on YouTube. Saying you hate exercise is like saying you hate food. You just have to find the kind that you like. The amazing Joe Wicks does Fit in 15. Excellent fifteen minute cardio workouts. You can forty-five minutes a week. Everybody can.

3: I made little lifestyle changes.

I gave up having sugar in my tea. Yes, I hated it at first but my taste buds changed and now I hate the taste of sugar in tea. I also made sure I upped my veg and fruit intake. Five-a-day is a minimum.

4: I stayed active.

The school run helps me to stay active. That and running around after my toddler. Walk more, do more housework or even just dance in the kitchen. Sitting down a lot leads to an early death.

5: I educated`myself.

There is a wealth or resources to help you stay healthy and fit. The NHS.co.uk has a huge amount of information about losing weight and getting fit. YouTube.co.uk has every kind of exercise video you can think of, plus talks on health. I love Women’s Health magazine and I also listen to podcasts. Channel 4 also have a great series called How To Lose Weight Well. It is important to keep looking for inspiration and new things. Losing weight and getting fit is only the beginning. Staying fit and heathy is just as hard.

It’s best if I come straight out with it.

I’m a thief.

Don’t be shocked. It’s because I used to be a teacher. I can’t speak for secondary school teachers, but, as a former infant teacher, I can assure you that in primary schools, the staff are a bunch of thieves.

You see a display in another classroom –  in a library – in a gallery – a shop – on Pinterest – anywhere at all – and your first thought is: I could adapt that idea.…

You see another teacher’s lesson and you think: I never thought of doing it that way. I’ll have a go at that. You open birthday and Christmas cards, thinking: Could 6-year-olds make this?

So, yes, I’ve been pinching ideas for years. I’m no longer a teacher, but I haven’t lost the habit. I’m still on the look-out for good ideas, as all writers are.

And they can pop up in the oddest places. Listening to This Morning on Radio 4 last autumn, I heard a piece about the criminal activity of “crossing county lines,” which inspired a plot-thread in a novel set in 1922. Likewise, an unexpected clause in a family will some years ago was adapted to pile all kinds of difficulties onto Greg Rawley’s financial problems in The Poor Relation.

The thing about writers gathering ideas is that you have no control over what will spark off an idea or how that idea will grow. Readers often ask, “Where do you get your ideas from?” I know that some writers have a jokey answer about buying ideas in the corner shop; but the real answer is that they come from all over the place – an overheard snippet of conversation, a photograph, something on the news, something that happens to you or a friend…. But what isn’t generally understood is that the idea is just a spark, not a whole book. You don’t lift your entire plot from real life. A single idea, or a couple of ideas, can be all it takes to make the plot grow. And the final plot will very probably bear no resemblance whatsoever to the original spark.

Take The Sewing Room Girl. As I said, I used to be a primary school teacher. The most important job done by any school is safeguarding the children in its care. To this end, teachers undergo regular training sessions to help them understand what they need to be aware of.

Ten years ago, my school gave a training day to safeguarding. Sad to say, much of the training on these occasions is based around discussing real cases. On this training day, an example was given of the way in which a particular adult had kept control of a vulnerable child. Let’s just say that a certain piece of household technology was used as a means of keeping the child in a state of fear.

Out of that single idea came Juliet’s story in The Sewing Room Girl. I should like to make it clear that the household object in the real example did not exist in the 1890s, the time when the book is set. Neither did anything from the real-life case appear in any form whatsoever in the book. But hearing of that frankly appalling and distressing case sparked off the original idea, which over time grew into a complete novel.

Another feature of these ideas that spark off books is that they don’t always get used. The single spark that started me writing The Deserter’s Daughter was an idea for something that would happen in the plot. But no sooner had I created the Armstrongs’ antiques shop in the book than I realised I couldn’t possibly use the original plot-point because the shop was just too posh!

But that’s the other thing about writers’ ideas. Nothing is ever wasted. You will be able to read that particular plot-point in a book that will be published next year….

Turkish Designer Bora Aksu Launches London Fashion Week

“NAZAR”

Spring/Summer 2014

Celebrating 10 years at London Fashion Week this year has spurred Bora Aksu to look back to his Turkish homeland and its rich, colourful and diverse culture. His spring/summer 2014 collection has been inspired by his childhood memories of there, memories that have had such a big influence on him.

Although Bora’s childhood memories of Turkey are still as magical today as when they were first played out, as Bora spent more and more time in London and travelled the world their uniqueness and richness has become more valuable to him. The long, hot summer days spent on the Aegean coast are the most prominent recollections that Bora draws on for this season’s inspiration. Long stretches of white sand, bobbing fishing boats, sun-faded houses with lush gardens and hidden village markets are the happy times that give his spring/summer collection a less melancholic feel than has been his signature to date.

Bora Aksu explains: “When I realised that this would be my tenth year at London Fashion Week, it struck me how long it has been since I left Turkey to come to study in the UK. It propelled me to reminisce and look back at my roots. I felt that I wanted to re-ignite the passion coming from the rich culture and traditional artistry of Turkey that had inspired me in the first place.”

Bora Aksu says of his new collection: ‘I’m delighted to have worked with the Turkish Ministry of Culture & Tourism as official sponsor for this London Fashion Week show. After 10 years showing in London it’s been great to go back to my roots and be inspired by the rich culture and traditional artistry of Turkey. The patterns and textures of the Iznik tiles that adorn the show invite have been re-created using traditional handwoven Turkish textiles incorporated into pencil skirts, dresses, cropped jackets and boleros.

Layering continues to be key, with geometric laces over silk tulles and chiffons or used as sheer panels against quilted cotton for added texture in skirts and dresses. Hand crochets produced in Izmir create accents across the collection.

Classic shapes have been contrasted with summer shorts and knitted tees while plastinated cottons update the traditional feel.

The colour palette for the collection began with the traditional ‘nazar boncuk’ or ‘evil eye bead’. Worn in Turkey to ward off evil, legend says that if one should break it is a sign that you have been saved from a great misfortune. Traditionally made from a disc of blue glass, it is this protective colour of the evil eye that dominates the collection. Off-whites also play a key role keeping the collection light before bold injections of bright yellows and fuchsia are introduced, reminding Bora of the long hot summers that he so enjoyed.

“This collection has been incredibly personal for me” Bora Aksu says “It’s been fantastic to have the support from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and to take this first step in highlighting a land I am so passionate about and connected to. I hope the show will inspire people to explore the rich culture and traditional artistry that Turkey has to offer.”

Time To Give Up Sugar? Day 15, 16 & 17.

get off sugar, no sugar diet, should i give up sugar, is sugar bad for you, the white stuff, is sugar evil,This programme has been an eye-opener. I knew there was a lot of sugar in food, but looking at food labels is incredibly depressing. I even got sent some water for possible review and it had 12.5g of sugar added. Half your daily allowance! Why anyone would take something as healthy as water and add sugar is beyond me.

On Day 15 Laura sends me Meal Inspiration via email:

 

Meal Inspiration 

 

Breakfast | Half a tub of cottage cheese on rye bread with half an avocado & some cherry tomatoes (a nice non-egg, non nut option!)

 

Lunch |  Try a large tuna salad and add half a can of chickpeas, some feta cheese, roast sweet potato and a sprinkling of seeds to bulk it up. The more ingredients, the more tasty!

 

Snack | Chicken shavings (from the deli) and a slice of tomato on an oatcake

 

Dinner | Palma Ham covered chicken with shaved parmesan tucked inside, with some mashed squash and broccoli.

What I have mostly learned from this diet is that it is possible to eat, and eat well, without having any sugar whatsoever. You can still enjoy your food and have good meals and drinks. I will put some recipes together for you.

I have more energy now and I feel better about my health. No crashing sugar highs and lows. I can’t say it is not hard, it is. I still want tea, and chocolate. All those things that I am not allowed. I am over two weeks into the diet and still feeling positive. The acid reflux I used to have is gone.

I made a pie yesterday. It took about four hours but was very healthy with steak and a lot of vegetables. I have been eating well and the food I have been eating is delicious. I am feeling positive for the rest of the programme, and next week will also be allowed fruit and dark chocolate. Can’t wait.

Dark Hearts Director Rudolf Buitendach On Film & Inspiration

Frost went along to the world premier of Dark Hearts at the 2012 Raindance Film Festival. We had lots of fun and really enjoyed the film. Here is our interview with the film’s director, Rudolf.

Tell us about Dark Hearts

Dark Hearts is on one level a neo-noir, a film that gives a voice to the dark side – on another it is a film about passion and obsession and the thin line in-between. How some of us will give anything for our art,

Dark Hearts is an impressive first film. Are you happy with the finished film?

I find it very hard to watch anything I’ve done objectively, but thanks.


Dark Hearts reminded me of a film noir. Can you tell us about the general look and feel you were going for?

Yes, as mentioned above I consider it a neo-noir. I based the film’s palette on the rust and decay of Downtown LA’s art district. With the help of Travis Zariwny, a great production designer, Kees Van Oostrum a great DP and Suzanne Barnes, a great costume designer we wanted the ‘mise en scene’ to be portraits in themselves. I think we succeeded quite well in places, despite our modest budget.

Dark Hearts is your first feature film. Was it scary making the leap?

It wasn’t scary at all as I had done quite a few shorts at this point, I just wished I had a bit more time to enjoy losing my ‘feature virginity’

Tells us a bit about you. How did you get into film?

I was studying law when I saw a film that changed my life, Wim Wenders’ Wings Of Desire. I finally knew what I wanted to do with my life and enrolled in film school, I was hooked for life.

What is the hardest thing about directing films?

Everyone with a TV and a Facebook account fancies themselves a critic and no matter how hard you try to be original, someone will always try and rain on your parade

How was the process of financing?

It was very tough and in true indie style we didn’t have an official green light even days before the filming was about to commence. But I was very lucky that I had a brave producer Jack Bowyer who believed in me when push came to shove.

How did you choose the actors?

I had wonderful casting agents Lisa Essary and Heidi Levitt who brought most of the actors to audition and I picked them from there, apart from Lucas Till who came through a brilliant agent Larry Shapiro.

You had quite a short shooting schedule. Do you think that was a help or a hindrance?

It was neither, just a whirlwind.

Who is your inspiration?

I have many, starting with Luis Bunuel, the surrealist painters, the symbolists up to modern filmmakers like Park Chan Wook, Lynch, Gilliam, Cronenberg, Greenaway and Roy Andersson.

The film has an amazing score. Who chose the music?

I did, I’m lucky in that a lot of the artists were my friends. I also had help from a musical supervisor extraordinaire Bruce Lampcov.

What is next for you?

I am in post on my second feature ‘Where The Road Runs Out’ starring Isaach De Bankole, with another 2 scripts ready to roll, any financiers out there?
